Interrupting, Interbeing, and Introducing!
|
Greetings!
We have been waiting a long time for one of our favorite Jewish scholars and performers, Amichai Lau-Lavie of Storahtelling, to join us for a Living Room event. If you have ever wished to learn from a Rabbi, going far and deep in dynamic exchanges between people, life, and text, this is your event! No matter your tradition, what you learn from Amichai will linger in your head and heart. Dive in this Wednesday night, Oct. 27 for "Bible, Interrupted"(see more below).
On Oct. 28, Religious Freedom USA is organizing an Interfaith Teach-In at Park51. Our founder Pastor Samir Selmanovic will be a teacher along with Imam Shamsi Ali and Rabbi Guy Austrian. No long lectures and lots of discussion! And many new friends! See the sidebar for more details, and RSVP is required.
And mark your calendar for Nov. 10 when we will not study, but rather experience the heart of Islam with our dear dervish friends from Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi order (see "Interbeing" below). Then on Dec. 8, join us for an interactive craft session with Andy Padre titled "Creating Sacred Objects." More information coming soon; however, in the meanwhile read this New York Times article on our host, better known as Metrocard Man!
And finally, brothers and sisters, ladies and gentleman, friends and family, we are proud and exuberant to introduce to you Palliath Jacob Mathew, a beautiful son and the first child or our Executive Director Bowie Snodgrass and George Mathew. Get the scoop on the baby name and family pictures below. And by the way, they are joining Faith House on Oct. 27th!
To those of you who live far away from New York, you are not far away from us. You are us. Your support, encouragement, critique, ideas, and prayers do reach us and keep us whole.
Much gratitude to all who have been a part of our summer fund-raising campaign, so that we can Risk More and Sooner. Thank you for being a part of and investing in this community!

LIVING ROOM GATHERING Bible, Interrupted: Can the oldest tool for transmission of sacred scriptures serve as a bridge between religions?
Wednesday, October 27, 20106 pm Doors, 7 pm ProgramIntersections, 274 5th AveBtwn 29th and 30th StsWith Amichai Lau-Lavie, Founder and Executive Director of Storahtelling
2,500 years ago, in front of Jerusalem's Water Gate, the Bible was first presented as a publicly performed sacred narrative. Amichai Lau-Lavie, Judaic scholar, performance artist and the founder and director of the NY based Storahtelling Company, leads an exploration of this historic moment through text study and conversation, examining the radical implications of this ancient ritual for today's global search for meaningful ways of making our sacred legacies relevant, accessible, engaging and transformational.
Amichai is an Israeli-born teacher of Judaic Literature, described as 'one of the most interesting thinkers in the Jewish world' by the NY Jewish Week. Amichai studied at various yeshivot, including the Shalom Hartman Institute and the Elul Center in Jerusalem. Between 1992 and 1996 he directed the summer programs at Melitz: the Jewish Zionist Centers in Jerusalem, focusing on the integration of Jewish education via the arts. His theatrical experience as a writer and performer includes the Theatre Company Jerusalem, The Acco Theatre Group in Israel and the Avodah Dance Ensemble in the U.S. Between 1997-2000 he served as Artist-in-Residence at Congregation B'nai Jeshurun in New York City.
Amichai was a Jerusalem Fellow at the Mandel Leadership Institute in Israel (2008-2009) and is a consultant to the Reboot Network, a member of the Synagogue 3000 Leadership Network, serves on the Advisory Council for the Six Points Fellowship, the Advisory Board for Faithhouse Manhattan, and the Board of Directors of Nehirim.

LIVING ROOM GATHERING Interbeing: Experience the heart of Islam
Wednesday, November 10, 2010 6 pm Doors, 7 pm Program Intersections, 274 5th Ave Btwn 29th and 30th Sts With Khabir John McGeehan, Juliet Rabia Gentile, Mujadid Shah and the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order
"Whatever I say, You are the subject. Wherever I go, every impulse is toward You." ~Yunus Emre
Sufism or tassawuf is mostly identified today with the figure of the whirling dervish and the poetry of Rumi. It is a path to Reality. Tonight dervishes of the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order invite you to experience the sacred tradition of dhikrullah, or the remembrance of Allah. "Remember Me and I will remember you." (Hadith)
"Nobody son of nobody" (quoting Abd'ul Khayr) Khabir John McGeehan is a dervish of the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order and is grateful for the blessing of Shaykha Fariha. The Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order is a community of dervishes within the Halveti-Jerrahi Tariqat, in the specific lineage and spirit of Shaykh Muzaffer Ashki al-Jerrahi, Shaykh Nur al-Jerrahi, and Shaykha Fariha al-Jerrahi. They are based at Dergah al-Farah in NYC, with various circles throughout the U.S. and Mexico. They joyfully welcome seekers and students of all religious and non-religious paths into our gatherings.
RSVPs welcome, but not required, on Facebook and MeetUp.
