Go and Bear Fruit!
You did not choose me but I chose you. And I
appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. -- John 15:16 Today is "moving day" in our annual conference, a day
when pastors transitioning to a new appointment are on the road, with boxes,
with memories and with hopes. It is a good day to pray for our United Methodist
Church! Thank you for a great offering of prayer as we all embrace once
again the words of Jesus, who chose us for compassionate love and service and
for faithful witness in the world. God has appointed each of us within a particular context - a
particular life story, a particular family, a particular community. John Wesley said, "The world is my parish." His meaning and intent was
for the Methodists to realize that wherever in the world they were, that was
their parish. Wherever in the world you are today, embrace your
parish. Do not miss the blessing of this day. Life abundantly and
with great expectation. Jesus Christ, the True Vine, has called us branches. What a great mystery! What a great truth! What a great blessing! On Sunday, June 27, all churches in the Mississippi
Conference are invited to pray for our shared life, our churches in continuity
and our churches in transition. May God continue to use the church to
draw all people to the foot of the cross of Christ. With gratitude for your ministry, Hope
Morgan Ward

:: Celebrations

5K Arise! Shine! Run/Walk a Success
150 persons registered for the 7th Annual 5-K Arise! Shine!
Run/Walk, Saturday morning of Annual Conference, with 114 of those registered
participating. At 6:30 a.m. Bishop Ward led the racers in prayer and
moments later the runners and joggers were ushered to the front of the line
with walkers lined up across the rear. A starting gun sounded and
the race began. Participants included laity and clergy; young, middle
aged and seasoned persons. Overall winners are listed below.
The run also gave a "preaching moment." Annual Conference
guest Rev. Candace Lewis shared during her Saturday evening sermon how she
developed leg cramps close to the start and was in much pain and unable to
continue to jog. The pain became so severe that a fellow jogger, Luz
Dial, assisted letting her lean on her shoulders for the remainder of the
race. They crossed the finish close to last, but were elated to have finished
the race. She used this incident as a metaphor for life on our Christian
journey -- we all need help to finish our race.
Amazing Pace
and Methodist Healthcare once again sponsored the race lending to its success. -

Stop Hunger Now Update from Matt CasteelI wanted to follow up about your wonderful job packing meals so far this year. We began with an ambitious project during a financially tight time and ended up doing quite well. The year to date totals are as follows: - Tupelo District - 46,380 meals
- Hattiesburg/Seashore Districts - 62,562 meals
- Starkville District - 20,574 meals
- Senatobia District - 24,072 meals
- Brookhaven District - 31,690 meals
- Annual Conference/New Albany District- 26,796 meals
Total = 212,088 mealsMore than a 20' container (10 full pallets or 142,560 meals) of these meals have already been sent for Haiti Earthquake relief. These meals were one of two shipments (a 20' and a 40') to our partner Convoy of Hope, totaling 427,680 meals. With major help from the Mississippi United Methodist Conference we have packaged about 80 percent or 882,360 meals of our 1.1 million meals goal in 2010! Overall, SHN has packaged 8.6 million meals this year and over 29 million meals since 2005! I can't express thanks enough for all you have done in the fight to end hunger in our lifetime! I am confident these events have raised awareness and motivated young and old to get out and do for our brothers and sisters. It is our intention at SHN not only to save lives through our meal program, but to foster a grassroots movement of volunteers focused on hunger education and a wareness. Thank you for perpetuating this vision. I look forward to continuing our work together to end hunger! The graph shows our completed shipped meals as an organization. If you have questions about these numbers, please feel free to email me at mcasteel@stophungernow.org! Peace, Matt Casteel Program Coordinator
