Greetings!
This month, we're highlighting a few of our wonderful customers. We were excited to meet up with Robert Tucker-a Rochester landlord who came to us in search of a loan, and who hasn't had an eviction in 30 years! A link to Robert's interesting story is below.
We also tagged along with our Energy Services department to learn about some projects that are already making a huge difference for one Rochester family.
And, sadly, we're remembering Shawntavia Williams, a 12-year-old Rochester girl who died tragically on August 21. Please read below how you can help the Williams family during this difficult time.
Your input is always valued. If you have any questions or comments, drop us a line at nwinfo@nwrochester.org.

Remembering Shawntavia Williams
Many of you may remember the story we posted in our July newsletter about the arts and craft time at the Westside Farmers Market. One of the families that frequented the arts and craft time at the market was the Williams family of Barton Street.
Sadly, on August 21, one of the Williams children, Shawntavia, died suddenly. To read the full story in the Democrat and Chronicle, click here.
Our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Williams family during this difficult time.
In memory of Shawntavia, and to assist her family with the funeral arrangements, cash or checks can be dropped off at any ESL Credit Union branch. Checks may be made payable to Lashawn L. Williams, FBO (For Benefit Of): Funeral Expenses.

Helping You Stay Warm & Save Money
Fall is rapidly approaching, and now is the best time to start thinking about preparing your home for the cold winter months.
One of the ways NeighborWorks® Rochester can help is by conducting an Energy Audit on your home. For $175, our Energy Services staff will take an in-depth look at your home and be able to tell you which areas need to be more energy efficient in order to save you money and provide your family the most comfort.
This month, our Energy Services staff took on a project for one local Rochester family that has already made a significant impact on their comfort. Their primary problem was very high electric bills due to poor air conditioning. The project entailed cleaning her AC, air sealing, insulating the attic space and adding a cold air return so that the homeowners can change the filter with ease. During the audit, our staff also found five gas leaks which were repaired.
The project was completed, and within one day the homeowner noticed a difference. Prior to the work, the homeowner was keeping the AC at 60 degrees in order to cool the house down. However, the AC never stopped running and the home was still warm. Now, she is able to keep the AC at 74 degrees. This not only saves her money, but her family is also more comfortable than before.
Here are some photos of the work:
Cellulose insulation is made of recycled newspaper. Not only is it better on the environment, but it also has a slightly higher R-value than fiber glass. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation's effectiveness.
Before insulation can be blown in, our staff must seal up existing cracks and holes. This ensures that heat won't escape to the attic. This is a picture of an opening surrounding a heating duct in the attic-heat was escaping through this opening during the colder months and heat was entering through this opening during the summer months.
Our staff sealed the area around the duct; minimizing the amount of heat escaping to the attic.
Our Energy Services Manager, Brad Cherin, blows cellulose insulation into the attic.
Attic before the cellulose insulation was blown in.
Attic after the cellulose insulation was blown in. The cellulose was blown in atop the existing fiber glass insulation; creating an even tighter blanket in the family's attic.
