Greetings!

In this month's e-newsletter, we're taking the opportunity to highlight a few of NeighborWorks® Rochester's most important individuals - our volunteers.  All of our volunteers, past and present, have selflessly given of their time to help us make Rochester a better place to live and we are tremendously grateful for their sacrifice.

We're also launching our first video series for our Energy Services program, explaining how you can help NeighborWorks® Rochester with just $5.00, welcoming one of our newest staff members, and announcing a big award we just received from NeighborWorks® America.

Your input is always valued.  If you have any questions or comments, drop us a line at nwinfo@nwrochester.org.

NeighborWorks® Rochester

Receives $475,000 to Support Lending

This month, NeighborWorks® Rochester was awarded $475,000 in capital from NeighborWorks® America to support our Rehab Lending.

The award is part of special funding that was allocated to repair or rehab houses for individuals who income qualify.  If your home needs repairs or rehab, please contact us for more information about our low-interest Home Improvement Loan.  If you income qualify, these loans can also be coupled with grants that could cover up to 60% of the costs.

Intern Alums

NeighborWorks® Rochester has benefited from the talents of many gifted interns over the years. We recently heard back from two of them, Peter Yi and Camila Faccioni Mendes Nagay.

Peter Yi photoPeter Yi, who worked as a 2009 intern with NeighborWorks® Rochester when he was an Urban Studies student at RIT, has been selected for a fall internship with the Bronx District Attorney Office. Peter is currently studying law at John Hopkins University. During his internship, Peter assisted with Healthy Blocks neighborhood activities and events. He also assisted with program development, reporting and evaluation.

Camila Faccioni Mendes NagayAnd for those of you who remember our 2008 intern Camila Faccioni Mendes Nagay, she is now working for the architecture firm Sustentax back home in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Camila is a LEED certified architect and has already worked on three LEED certified development projects - Rochavera Towers, Braskem and Unilever (LEED Gold certified). During her time at NeighborWorks® Rochester Camila helped with program development and reporting, researched green materials to include in our rehab specs, as well as assisted with Healthy Blocks initiatives. She and her husband are expecting their first baby this fall.

Best of luck to Peter and Camila in all of your future endeavors!

Volunteer Gives of His Time to Teach Kids about Healthy Eating and Art

Many Rochester organizations and individuals are joining together to get the word out about healthy eating habits for kids, proper exercise and nutrition.

In fact, our very own Healthy Blocks volunteer Jesse Knoth gives of his time each Tuesday at the Westside Farmers Market to teach kids about healthy snack choices while they enjoy an arts and crafts time.  Jesse is currently a full-time student at RIT and serves as president of the Barton Street Block Club.

You may remember from our October e-newsletter that several Rochester residents attended the NeighborWorks® Community Leadership Institute in Milwaukee. Jesse was among the attendees, and as a result was able to secure grant money for the art, craft and snack time at the Westside Farmers Market.

A big Thank You to Jesse for all of his volunteer efforts in our community!
