Greetings!
This has been an exciting month at NeighborWorks® Rochester! From receiving $500,000 from the CDFI Fund, to exceeding our 2007 and 2008 education numbers, we are well on our way to making 2010 a successful and promising year. (We've even started a Fan Page on Facebook!) We've also added a few new faces around the office and are continuing to research new programs and projects that can better-serve our Rochester community. Thank you for your continuous support! Your input is always valued. If you have any questions or comments, drop us a line at nwinfo@nwrochester.org.

NeighborWorks® Rochester Awarded $500,000 Through CDFI Fund
NeighborWorks® Rochester has recently
been awarded $500,000 in lending capital through the Community Development
Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund. 2009 CDFI funding was awarded on a
competitive basis to CDFIs from across the nation. Only 62 CDFIs were awarded
funds in this application round. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter announced receipt of the award to NeighborWorks® Rochester's
Chief Executive Officer, Kim Brumber on Thursday, October 1.
The CDFI Fund, now
in its 15th year, was created for the purpose of providing lending
capital and technical support to U.S. Treasury certified CDFI organizations for
economic revitalization and community development initiatives. NeighborWorks® Rochester has been a
certified CDFI since 2002. Since that time, NeighborWorks® Rochester has reinvested 3.2 million dollars in the city
of Rochester
through our housing rehab loan and loan/grant programs. Our loans are made to city homeowners who do
not qualify for traditional bank financing. There are no maximum income guidelines
to qualify for a NeighborWorks® Rochester
loan. Eligible repairs that our loans can cover include: new roofs, furnaces,
windows, exterior painting and siding, lead hazard remediation, energy
improvements, porch repairs and more.

Education News: Exceeding 2007 and 2008
Over 290 individuals have attended NeighborWorks® Rochester's monthly
Homebuyer Orientations from January to October 2009. We are on track to exceed
300 individuals for the first time since we began offering these sessions in
2007. In that year, just under 80 individuals attended. In 2008, a total of
203 individuals attended.
NeighborWorks® Rochester's
Homebuyer Orientations are designed to provide first-time home buyers with an
overview of all the resources available to them to purchase a home. These
resources include: down payment and closing cost assistance, pre-purchase
education classes, employer assisted housing programs, legal services, house
hunting web sites and more. After the 20 minute presentation, participants meet
with our partner banks to talk about their mortgage products.
For more information on our education classes, click one of the Education Schedule links to the left, or call 585-325-4170.

Staff and Residents Travel to Community Leadership Institute in Milwaukee
Two members of our NeighborWorks® Rochester Healthy Blocks staff traveled with four residents from the city's Focused Investment Strategy (FIS) group to Milwaukee, WI on October 15-18 for training at the Community Leadership Institute.
The NeighborWorks® Community
Leadership Institute (CLI) is a national training conference that aims to strengthen
the voices and leadership skills of residents and
key volunteers in NeighborWorks®
communities. For residents, youth and emerging
leaders
of these communities, CLIs provide a
framework for learning and a forum for discussing community issues. NeighborWorks®
CLIs also provide opportunities for sharing best practices and solutions to problems.
Here is a photo from their visit:
From L to R: Relton Roland, Jesse Knoth, Sarah Culligan, Katrina Hanson and Cindy Kaleh with their Certificates of Completion through the CLI.
