EASIER UPGRADES FOR QANTAS FREQUENT FLYERS

Enhancements to the Qantas frequent flyer program aim to make it much more simple to use points for upgrades. Effective immediately, members lodging upgrade requests online for international flights can opt to be eligible for an upgrade right up until departure at the airport - unlike the previous system where upgrades were processed some hours before flights left.

Flyers requesting domestic upgrades can now register to be advised of availability via SMS. The previous process saw users having to repeatedly return to the site to check on availability of upgrade seats if they missed out when initially requesting. Another key change is that members can now request partial flight upgrades - so that for example on a Sydney-Singapore-London flight they can opt to be upgraded on a single sector if there is availability.

Qantas Chief Executive Loyalty, Lesley Grant, said the changes were a "terrific enhancement" based on new technology which means the carrier can now "surprise and delight" its 8.6 million frequent flyer members rather than disappoint them.

DUTY FREE BACK ON 747s

Qantas will reintroduce its 'In Sky Shopping' Duty Free program for passengers flying aboard its jumbo aircraft from 01 Aug 2012. According to the Qantas trade site, In Sky Shopping will be made available on both reconfigured 747-400 aircraft in addition to other 747-400 operating on international routes.

Routes where it will be offered include Brisbane to Los Angeles & Singapore, Sydney to Dallas and Los Angeles (and on to New York) and Sydney to Santiago. The program was removed due to reduced stowage pace on the refitted 747s & to ensure product consistency, but further work has been completed to identify an opportunity to allow carriage of duty free.

TOBACCO DUTY FREE CHANGES

As a part of this year's budget the Federal Government has made significant changes to the amount of tobacco a person may bring into Australia when returning from a business trip or holiday.

The new limit from the 1st September 2012  is ONLY 50 cigarettes. Click here to see more information issued by Customs.

We provide this to assist you in advance so that you know the new rules and are not caught out with more than the NEW allowable amount of cigarettes tax free.

Q-STREAMING ON ALL QANTAS B767 AIRCRAFT

Qantas Domestic CEO Lyell Strambi has just announced the rollout of the QStreaming inflight entertainment system across its full 23-strong Boeing 767 fleet.

The move follows a successful trial of the service earlier this year, with QF to partner with Panasonic and use its eXW system to provide more than 200 hours of on-demand IFE content via iPads to every passenger in both Business and Economy classes on the aircraft.

"Our customers were the first in the world to experience the ground-breaking WiFi entertainment technology and we received great feedback from our customers during the trial this year," he said.

QStreaming will be offered free of charge to all passengers flying on the 767s, with the first aircraft to roll out in the fourth quarter of this year, operating mainly on east coast routes and also across to Perth. Strambi said the launch of QStreaming was "part of a wider strategic investment across the domestic customer experience, including enhancements to ground operations and further domestic aircraft upgrades over the next few years".

NEW $568 MILLION HOTEL DEVELOPMENT FOR PERTH

James Packer's Crown Limited has announced the development of a new "six star luxury hotel" to be known as Crown Towers Perth.

The new 500-room property will expand the existing offerings at the Burswood Entertainment Complex, with the total investment in the project valued at $568 million. Upon completion Crown Towers Perth will be the WA capital's largest hotel, taking capacity at Burswood to nearly 1200 rooms. Construction will commence early next year, with an expected 2016 opening date.

Meanwhile, Crown has also announced plans to build another six-star property in Sydney at Barangaroo, likely to be called Crown Towers Sydney. Subject to approval, the hotel resort is expected to be located adjacent to Sydney Harbour and Barangaroo Central. "Sydney deserves one of the world's great hotels in its magnificent harbour. "My desire is for Crown to build the best hotel in the world at Barangaroo," Crown chairman James Packer boldly stated.
