Fun with Words
|
Since the kids are likely a little antsy this time of year, why not make learning as fun as possible? Here are some ways to have fun with words.
- Say a word and have your child say a rhyming word.
- When learning letters, have your child circle all the "a's" (or b's or c's, etc) in a catalog or magazine.
- Say a letter, then have your child name an animal or food that starts with that letter.
- Color all the vowels in a newspaper article.
- Take turns describing objects using a metaphor or simile (e.g., the snow is as soft as cotton candy) See how many you can come up with for one object, then vote on the best.
- When reading a story, have your child predict what will happen next. You could even have them write a list of things that could possibly happen.
- Read one book each night leading up to Christmas.
- Choose a newspaper article to discuss together.
- Have your kids make lists for you. This is the perfect time of year for lists; baking lists, gift lists, card lists, grocery lists, etc.
- Have your kids practice penmanship by letting them write out Christmas cards or address envelopes.
- Play Hangman or Scrabble.
- Give your child one of our blank books and write a question on each page, for them to answer.

Snow Much Fun!

My son asked me today, how to make a paper snowflake and I actually had to look it up. Good things there are a ton of resources on the web. You can find everything from basic to extravagant. Some are quite impressive !
