Vol. 10:3   Feb. 11, 2011

Greetings!

Happy Valentines Day, a little early!

Now that we're all digging out from our blizzard, here's what's happening at the Hammond Public Library

  • All that jazz: Join us this Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m., The Billy Foster Trio with vocalist, Renee Miles-Foster, visits Main Library to present "The History of Jazz."  Mr. Foster teaches jazz piano at Valparaiso University, where he also performs with the faculty jazz ensemble. Mr. Foster also hosts a jazz program on 88.7 FM, WGVE in Gary.
  • Tyler Perry Movie Showcase, each Tuesday in February, features a different film at a different location.
    See below for dates, times and films.
  • Check out Main Library's "Vintage Love Songs and Valentines" display this month! Vintage romance-related sheet music is exhibited, as well as valentines from the 1920s and 1930s. Display cases are on the first floor near the east entrance, and on the second floor outside the Suzanne G. Long Local History Room.

  • This year, the nation commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Join us at the E. B. Hayward Branch on Thursday, March 31 at 2 p.m., as Wendy St. Jean, Ph.D., assistant professor of history at Purdue University Calumet, presents "Black Soldiers in Indiana: A Civil War Experience." This program is geared for teens and adults as part of the programming for  "We the People: A More Perfect Union."

  • Do you have special occasion dresses sitting in your closet? Tri Kappa's Prom Dress Resale is looking for formal wear to help make prom more affordable. Dresses may be dropped off at Main Library from Feb. 18 through March 6. You may receive a tax deduction! (Donation slips are available at Main Library.)

 All HPL locations are closed on the following days:

  • Monday, February 21 for Presidents Day;
  • Tuesday, March 8 for library-wide staff training

Note: Tax forms are available at Main Library, west of the staircase on the first floor. Tax preparation volunteers are NOT available this year.
