Greetings!
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Did you know that our state played a big part of the history of the circus in this country? Friends of the Library and the Hammond Historical Society plan a joint meeting on Sat., Nov. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon at Main Library. "The History of the Circus in Indiana" is presented by Kreig Adkins, author of Peru: Circus Capital of the World, published by Arcadia. Learn why Hagenbeck-Wallace, Sells-Floto and Ringling Brothers were among the shows that spent winters in Peru, Indiana, near Kokomo. Richard Lytle, librarian in our Suzanne G. Long Local History Room, is the author of The Great Circus Train Wreck of 1918: Tragedy Along the Indiana Lakeshore. The book chronicles what happened in 1918 when a Hagenbeck-Wallace train was rear-ended near Hammond by a train carrying World War I troops. Many people still wish to purchase copies of No Performances Today by the late Warren Reeder, which told the story but has been out of print for many years. Lytle's book was written to help meet this interest. The meeting is open to members of both groups, and to the public. Both groups accept new members on that day, and offer publications and other items for sale. The authors will sign copies of their books, which will be available for purchase. _________________________________________ LIBRARY HOLIDAY HOURS: All locations close Wed., Nov. 24 at 5 p.m. All locations are closed Thurs., Nov. 25, and Fri., Nov. 26. |
