Senior Night Celebrated With Lady Hawks Victory by Corey Roberts, Class of 2012
Monday, the Hawks soccer program celebrated Senior Night. It was the final home game for seniors, Emily Gray Powell, Mary Grace Gillmann, Lydia Powell, and J.J. Thomasson. Heritage played rival, Arlington Christian School, and the Lady Hawks were victorious.
However, the girls' game did not go as planned. Roughly 27 minutes into the contest, with the score locked up at 0-0, the lightning detector was set off by an approaching storm, forcing the teams to leave the field. After a few minutes had passed, the teams were called back onto the field to resume play. The lightning detector was set off yet again, causing a delay of over an hour. Due to time restraints, the coaches and referees agreed to continue the game when the rain ceased but shortened the length of the second half from 40 to 25 minutes. After play began again, Emily Gray Powell, the School's all-time record holder for goals in a career, was fouled in the penalty box, rewarding the Hawks with a penalty kick opportunity. Megan Gruber converted the opportunity to put the Hawks up 1-0. A little later in the half, Powell added a goal of her own off of a tremendous cross from freshman, Ansley Dieckmann, to make the score 2-0.
In the shortened second half, freshman, Shelbie Mills, closed out the scoring when she bent a corner kick in from the right wing to make the score 3-0, which was the final score. Hawks head coach Ron Rineer was pleased with the win but wanted to see more, saying, "Although we are in a lull, we need to improve for our run to the state championship."
The Lady Hawks improved their record to 10 - 1 and finished the season undefeated in region play for the 5th straight season.
Editor's note: The Lady Hawks are 1-AA Region Champs for the fourth year in a row! They will play Gatewood at home in the varsity playoffs on Friday, May 6.
Heritage track team runs to success on April 20th's track meet by Kaitlin Pepper 2012, Tripp Brown 2015, and Neal Kirkland 2012
Heritage had a successful track meet on their home track on Wednesday, April 20. Competing teams were Harvester Christian, Flint River Academy, and the Cottage School. This meet was the 4AA region meet. Heritage athletes' performances reflected the hard work of the team.
The Heritage boys' 4x400 relay team of Will Duke, Trevor Sawyer, David Bready, and John Veal came in second place with a time of 4.09 minutes, finishing seven seconds behind Harvester Christian. "This was still one of our best times of the year. We still did really well considering all of the people who competed in this race had already run at least three events," Coach J.P. Weaver said.
The boys' 4x100 relay team consisting of Will Thompson, David Bready, John Veal, and Will Duke finished the race in second place right behind Harvester Christian with a time of 50.5 seconds. "There was a missed hand-off between Will Duke and Will Thompson during the race so we didn't make a record time, but we still made one of our better times for this year," said Coach J.P.
Sophomore, Will Thompson, ran an outstanding meet Wednesday as he raced on the boys' 4x100 team and in the 800 meter run. The 4x100 team placed second with a time of 50.50. He also placed second in the 800 with time of 2.29. Coach J.P. had a few comments on Will's performance, "About a week ago, I went to Will and asked him to try running the 800 for the meet before region. He had been running 400's the whole season prior to this. Will ran a great race in his first 800 all season and placed 2nd in only his 2nd race doing the 800," Coach J.P. said he knew Will had run cross-country in the fall and hopes in the future for him to improve his 800 times and eventually become a mile runner.
The girls' 4x400 team with Julie Thames, Chase Parker, Aleisha Kahn, and Mackenzie York came in first place with a time of 4:50.69, beating their second placed opponents by three seconds.
The girls' 4x100 relay consisted of Chase Parker, Mackenzie York, Julie Thames, and Mollie Carter. They ran a 57.78 coming in 3rd just .05 seconds behind Flint River Academy. It truly was a photo finish.
Senior, Aleisha Khan, ran the mile and the 800 qualifying in both with good times, coming in 2nd in the 800 with a time of 2.50. She ran a 6.30 in her mile lapping two girls on her last lap.
Junior, Julie Thames, ran the 200 meter dash with a time of 32.98, coming in 3rd overall. She also threw the discus a distance of 59-09.
Sophomore, Mackenzie York, ran several events on Wednesday including the 800 meter run, the 400 meter dash, the shot-put discuss, and ran both the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay. She finished 4th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2.53 coming back from 6th with 80 meters to go. It was a very close race. She finished 2nd in the 400 with a time of 1.09 and threw 25-07 in the shot-put. York remarked that she is excited to be going to State in all of her events and is most excited about running her 400.
Heritage's own Chase "The Rocket" Parker left no chance at all for the other athletes. Parker got off to an amazing start and quickly gained ground over her opponents, finishing the event in 1st place qualifying her for state in the girls 100m high hurdles.
Senior, John Veal, came in first place in the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 18.77 seconds. John was running right next to his Harvester Christian opponent until the very end of the race where he jumped in front and beat him by just .7 seconds.
Sophomore, David Bready, proved he was an-all around athlete placing 3rd in the 100m dash, 1st in the 400m dash, 1st in the high jump, and 2nd in the 4x100 relay. After the race, we caught up with him and he told us, "It was a good feeling (placing in all the events) being a 1st time freshman."
Junior, Joel Prock, ran the mile event in 5 minutes and 35 seconds putting him in 2nd place. He was only seconds behind his opponent's time. Coach J.P. Weaver commented saying, "With just a little more aggression, he could have won the race, but I'm still proud of his performance."
Senior athlete, Logan Kimball, placed first in the shot-put event throwing 41ft. 1in., which was one of his best throws of the year.
8th grader, Mollie Carter, participated in both of the girls' relays. They relay teams ran a 4.50 in the 4x400 and a 57.78 in the 4x100.
Sophomore, Will Duke, qualified for state in two events, the 400 and 200 meter dashes with times of 1 minute and 26 seconds, respectively.
The track team is currently competing in the State meet in Albany, which concludes on April 30.
