Freshmen Biology Students to be Published | Last summer, Sophie Gay Engel and Abbie Farr participated in a scientific experiment at Utah State University with Dr. Edmund D. Brodie, Jr. and graduate student, Brian G. Gall. They researched antipredator mechanisms in the newt Taricha Granulosa. They spent three weeks in the biology lab, testing whether or not the newts responded to the scent of their only predator, the garter snake. They collected data, compiled results, made a poster, and contributed to a research paper that will be published this spring in a scientific research journal. Way to go, girls! |
Walt Gutierrez Nominated for Citizen of the Year |
Heritage parent and Board member, Walt Gutierrez, is one of eight nominees for Coweta's 2011 Citizen of the Year. The Citizen of the Year award recognizes an individual with outstanding leadership and citizenship within the community who demonstrates exemplary vision, civic pride, and a strong commitment to a better Coweta.
Mr. Gutierrez operates Toyota of Newnan, one of the largest businesses in Coweta County. He serves on the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He has been involved in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and with the Community Welcome House. He is also a member of Rotary International. Mr. Gutierrez has been a member of the Heritage Board of Directors since 2009, and he currently serves on the Board's Marketing and Development Committee. His daughter, eighth grader Isa Gutierrez, has been a Heritage student since 2006. Earlier this year, Mr. Gutierrez and Toyota of Newnan donated a new football/soccer scoreboard to The Heritage School. Heritage is very grateful for his contributions and commitment to the School. |
Biology Field Trip to the CDC |
The Biology class recently took a field trip to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. Teacher Lory Pendergrast has taken students to the CDC for the past three years. Her goal is to expose students to different types of careers in the life sciences. The CDC offers students a glimpse into what one can do with a science/biology degree besides attending medical school. It also offers some historical perspective on our medical advances.
This trip ties in nicely with the class unit on viruses and emerging diseases. Prior to the visit, this years' students attended a webinar on emerging diseases, specifically dengue fever. The webinar was given by Dr. Eva Harris, Ph.D., who runs a clinic in Nicaragua.
In the picture above right, you can see future anesthesiologist, Nash Woodlief, and future surgeon, Hayden Robinson, operating on Will Rice. (Students were asked to research and present a future career in biology of interest to them.)
Above left, Kelly Abrams and Leland Warren try on biohazard suits. |
