... things you need to know about your business computers.                                 your personal, computer company
January,  2011
Welcome Back!

Greetings!

We haven't felt compelled to write a newsletter since
we warned you about the Vista debacle several years ago. However, all the hype about the "Cloud" has everyone confused and needs to be addressed. I call it...
Cloud Computing: De-mist-ifying (pun intended) the Ambiguous.

Hey, the recession is over, have a Great 2011, go Steelers!
What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is when you use an application or access data from a computer located somewhere else using the Internet. It's that simple.
You probably already use the cloud without realizing it. Search engines such as Google and any web site or social network you belong to are all cloud computing. You may use a payroll service for your company... cloud computing! All good things.
So why the big hype now? Well, honestly, its all about Microsoft... again! You see, they've become so large that it's difficult to grow at a rapid rate. Read that as Steve Balmer's (Bill Gates replacement) stock options are hurting. So they've decided it would be really cool if they could convince you to move all your software and data off your company's servers and give it to them and then they can charge you to use it.. As with Vista, it is cool... for them... NOT for you.
Now everybody is jumping on the bandwagon, even less cool.
See the next article for why.

Should I Use the Cloud?
As always, yes and no. For the type of applications I mentioned above, it is the best way to go. See the right sidebar article for cloud apps we think make sense, or not.
To move your data and programs off to the cloud, I think not. First, the Internet is not all that reliable and who needs yet another reason for your computers to not work. Second, do you really want your proprietary data in someone elses hands? Large on-line applications, such as cloud apps, are prime targets for hackers and cyber terrorists. Why expose yourself? Finally, what if there is a business "issue". Say you refuse to pay an unfair invoice and they shut you off. Can you say, extortion? What if they "don't make it" (remember the .com fiascoes) and the Sheriff padlocks their door with your data inside? That would be fun.
So just keep your cool, don't do anything silly, and call us if you need more advice. Our number is below.
