Teens do want to talk |
|
Research shows that when teens are asked to rank the major influences on their lives, they list their parents as number one. But when parents are asked to give the same ranking about their teens, they incorrectly list themselves last. As a parent, do you realize just how important your voice is?
With the holidays right around the corner, there is so much to get done. Please add talking to your teen to your to-do list. When given a chance, teens do want to talk. Here are some conversation starters that could help pave the way to a more open and connected relationship with your child - and what greater gift is there? Try asking:
- Have you thought about what gift to get your friends?
- The more you learn about your child's friends,
the bigger the window you have into their life experiences.
- If you had $500 to give to a cause, which one would you pick and why?
- Exploring your teen's passions, interests and concerns helps her or him develop connections
to the world beyond your front door.
- Which is your favorite (or least favorite) holiday commercial and why?
- Advertisers create an idealized scene to sell their products. Inappropriate behaviors (i.e., drinking, seductive attire, and overspending) look appealing; discussions with your teen can remind them of the reality behind the image.
- Are you making a New Year's resolution? Tell me about it.
- New Year's is a great time for everyone in the family to wipe the slate clean and start fresh.
