FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! Yes, we
could have a fire or an accident or a serious situation here, for there are
wonderful donations all over the Children's Closet- but they are on the floor
in bags.
It is not
only a safety hazard and a fire hazard but we need the clothes on shelves so
that we can provide for the children quickly and efficiently. If you get
bored, need something
for your teenagers or middle school kids to do - please have them come out and
help us!We need your prayer group,
tennis group, men's group or anyone to come out and help volunteer and help us
help these displaced children. We also need
volunteers to deliver clothes to foster children and agencies in Berkeley and
Dorchester Counties, due to the cost of gas for the truck, etc. and hope that
you can help us there also. Summer is the busiest time for child abuse
and we do not want them to go without, after what they have already been
through.
I have
never asked for money, but because of the many donations made to the earthquake
relief in Haiti, we were hurt desperately financially and really need you to
consider a donation if you can, to help us meet the day-to-day costs of running
the clothing closet and to purchase items needed for the children, for the
libraries we create, and for children's events. We would like someday to build
a small warehouse in our back yard to expand our ability to store all of the
items that we provide for our children. We also want to provide an area for a
small dressing room with mirrors so that the children can go shopping and try
on their clothes. If you would like to send a check, our address is:LOR, PO Box 1074, Charleston, SC 29402 or go
to our website to pay by credit card.
I know this
might be a lot to ask but I must ask for Lowcountry Orphan Relief is the voice
of a child and we need to LISTEN.
Blessings
to all,
Lynn
Lowcountry Orphan Relief Purchases and Dedicates Building "The Valerie Vincent
Children's Closet"
The Unveiling of The Valerie Vincent Children's Closet
Lowcountry Orphan
Relief, Inc. (LOR) recently dedicated its building in memory of Valerie
Vincent, sister of volunteer Elise Furer.
Through Valerie's foundation, a large donation was made so that LOR
could purchase their building from the Noisette Company at The Navy Yard at
Noisette.The building is now known
as the Valerie Vincent Children's Closet. The picture shows the unveiling of the plaque with Valerie's
children Ted, Ann and Bill Vincent, Shelley Furer, niece, Elise and Bob Furer,
and LOR Founder and Director, Lynn Young.
Lowcountry Orphan Relief is the first
responder with clothing and basic necessities when children are removed from
their homes due to abuse or neglect.Last year LOR clothed over 2,100 children
Angels On The Ground Members From The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Refurbish LOR Headquarters
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
While the Blue Angels roared overhead, angels of another sort swarmed
in and around the Lowcountry Orphan Relief facility in North
Charleston on Saturday, April 17, refurbishinga facility that provides clothing and
supplies for hundreds ofneglected, abused
and abandoned children in the greater Charleston
area.
Members ofthe Churchof Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Charleston 1st Ward, locatedon Sam RittenburgBlvd. in West Ashley , sought a community
resourcein need ofsubstantial refurbishing, one especially
impacted by the enduring recession.Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Inc. fit the bill. The non-profit , private organization
provided clothing and supplies for2,132children in 2009, a 40%
increase over the orders filled in the previous year, reflecting the economic
hardship in the area.
The facility, located at 1850
Truxtun Ave. at The Navy Yard at Noisette,
receives, sorts and distributes donated clothing and supplies upon request from
agencies and schools.Formerly a
duplex that housed families of junior naval officers, the facilitywas in need of interior and exterior
painting as well as roof work, landscaping and installation of a parking area.
Ninety volunteers fromthe LDS Church,
including 18children, stepped in to
meet these needs.They scrapped peeling
paint, wielded paint brushes,replaced
rotted roofing,removed
concrete-embedded cloth line posts, raked leaves and debris, pruned trees and
bushes , surrounded the building and trees with ground cover and planted flowers
.A 120x35 foot parking area was
constructed from 42 tons of gravel and railroad ties. They also completed an extensive clothing
drive, and the young women filled orders for delivery Monday morning. The effort was part of a Day of Service
program conducted by the LDS
Church in the
Southeastern Statesthat involves
thousands of volunteers in a variety of community service projects.
Lowcountry Orphan Relief's
Founder, Lynn Young, expressed amazement at the scope and impact of the
volunteer effort ."I am
overwhelmed by the effort and goodness ofthese volunteers. They have made
a lasting contribution to the welfare of the many children in need in our
community."

volunteer, Mr. Bill Dorrity.The books
were arranged and labeled by grade level and the room was decorated with fun
and colorful posters and cut-outs for the children to enjoy and to help them
appreciate reading.
This class turned a room into a place of
fun and learning for these children and Lowcountry Orphan Relief wants to thank
them for all of their love and support and for this great project.

Alise Dorrity with husband Bill
Seventy-eight year old Alise Dorrity of Goose Creek just returned from doing a medical mission in Cebu City,
The Philippines.
There she learned of a program run
by The Church of Christ; whereby, they help children and adults with
cleft palates. Many of these families have very little so Alise
requested clothing for some of them which they are sending to the Philippines through a non-profit organization in Texas.
Many people

711 Orders For Children Filled To Date
Lowcountry Orphan Relief Founder, Lynn Young calls out for
volunteers: "I know I sound like a broken record, but my heart hurts
for the children who have been through Lowcountry Orphan Relief the
past months and the number we have served. I hope you all realize how
important you are to a child and just a little of your time would be a
blessing."
Please know that "the other person" cannot fill your shoes. Let's pass it on - Let's give back!

Community Relations
40 Low Country Neighborhoods and Counting
We are so excited to have two new neighborhoods joining our LOR awareness
efforts. We now have 40 represented in the tri-county area. It has been our goal to have neighborhoods initiate gatherings to hear and
ask questions about Lowcountry Orphan Relief.
On March 31st, Delores Rosebrock entertained her neighbors, in I'On, at a
luncheon and Susie Lee spoke with the ladies about LOR, the who, what, where,
why. These ladies brought children's clothes and several monetary donations to
the luncheon. They were very interested in the volunteerism for LOR.
On April 22nd, Catherine Diehl entertained about 40 neighbors at a wine tasting
in her home in Marsh Harbor. These neighbors also brought clothing for the
children and gave monetary donations to LOR. The question and answer period was
most productive.
If any neighborhood would like to have a tea, coffee, cookout, wine
tasting, just question and answer time to meet those of us from LOR, that would
be great! Please call Susie Lee at 216-1876 to set this up. The more of our community that knows the facts
and how they can help... the better! Let's make it happen! I am also
always happy to bring our truck, LORI, to your neighborhood for an event or as a
reminder. Plan something for summer or plan ahead for Fall!
We also want to thank the ladies of Coosaw Creek who invited us to their
Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show. Their generosity and warm spirit are a big
part of LOR. We are really looking forward to working with them on a holiday
event.
Tina Radding and the other directors and students at the Charleston Bridge
Center, have been so generous with their enthusiasm by donating hundreds of
children books and
toiletries for the Valerie Vincent Children's Closet.
The Tidelands Bank branches are keeping our phones ringing! Kudos to the
Park West branch, Ashleigh and the entire staff. Our LOR royal blue boxes in
each branch are so convenient for clothing, book, and toiletry drop-offs. With
Spring cleaning and summer coming ahead, we need to stock our shelves. Please
remember that all underwear and socks must be NEW!
Thanks so much!
Susie Lee
