picture, SusanDear Friends,

Summer is the season for art! The bag is almost packed and I leave Monday for a trip to Spain and France where I'll be leading a group in watercolor sketchbooking on the southern France countryside. And the fingers are itching to get started. Picture me on the Costa Brava beach, not sunbathing, but under an umbrella madly sketching everything and everyone in sight! I hear there's so much to see in Barcelona that any sketching I do will probably have to be while standing or walking!

Last month I had some good practice for this.  At the Barnyard Sketching workshop we hung out with chickens and goats for a day, taking on the challenge of capturing moving subjects.  Step one:  tell yourself "I can do this!"  Step two: think of your eyes as camera lenses and take quick memory snap shots.  Step three:  draw like crazy and keep drawing until you learn the parts and can put them together into a whole chicken!

I hope you'll join me later in the month in Gualala, California for some more travel sketching at the ocean, and in July for a weekend of freeing the creative spirit. Read on for more details of these summer workshops and fall preview. And take advantage of summer as the season for art!

Cheers,
Susan

Travel Sketchbooking

harbor boats

Join me for a weekend at the beautiful oceanside town of Gualala, California on the north coast! Lodgings of all kinds available nearby.

I'll be bringing back lots of new ideas from my sketchbooking trip in France this month and sharing them in many of the natural settings this beachside village has to offer.  Using pen and watercolors which fit in a purse or pack, you will create your own captivating color sketchbook which records not only the visual experience but your personal reactions..

Drawing warm ups, watercolor painting technique, and collage and textures will be demonstrated with ample time to practice the new skills around town.  We will also be practicing meditation techniques to improve our sensory awareness of the moment.

Date:  June 26, 27
Time:  10am-4:30pm
Location:  Gualala Arts, Gualala, CA
Cost:  $150 members, $175 non-members

Expect the unexpected!  In the peaceful setting of Bennett Peak Ranch in Sonoma County wine country we'll be slowing down our clocks and entering the world of creative spirit, where the inner artist emerges and we gain access to wisdom and mystery.  Whether you're new to the Muse groups or accustomed to creative practice, you can expect some magic of transformation to happen here.

The weekend features a unique interplay of instruction in water media painting and collage techniques, art journaling and written word with meditation/contemplation to quiet the mind and summon the Muse, and music and gentle movement to engage the body in creative expression.

Muse Groups

A new 6-month series of monthly Muse groups will begin the first weekend in September!  More information available on my website.

I was touched recently by an email from a student who wrote:
"The Muse Group has been the perfect antidote for someone like me recovering their connection to the joys of doing art.  I just realized in the last couple of days that since starting the group, I've gotten out all of my old drawings and materials that had been locked away gathering dust, transformed my dining room into a working mini studio, and I'm not afraid of the blank paper any more. The Artist's Way [Julie Cameron's] process helped, but art journaling has felt so safe and nourishing and enticing that my repressed artist self couldn't resist any more and finally came out to play again." -Muse Linda

Hot Blog!

A couple years ago I made friends online with a French artist living in Spain named Miki.  We are both water media artists and have an appreciation for each other's work.  Her style of travel sketchbooking is so different from my own and so appealing that I enjoy visiting her blog to get fresh ideas.  She has little concern for traditional methods of capturing perspective and her sketches are filled with energetic ink lines and fabulous fresh color that illustrates her feelings about her experience.  Isn't that after all why we paint?  Enjoy her sketches for yourself on Miki's blog.
Conversations With The Muse:  The Art Journal As Inner Guide
by Susan Cornelis

In this book I share my art journals and the personal revelation and healing which is cultivated through this process.  The reader is guided through the steps including:  accessing a quiet state of mind, translating inner feelings and visions to paper, employing a wide array of painting and collage techniques, and writing expressively to reap vibrant meaning from the images appearing in this spontaneous manner. The colorful images, materials, techniques, and written words combine for a rich feast for the imagination.

You may preview the book on blurb.com  and see the first 10 pages.  Softcover and hardcover versions are also available directly from the Blurb bookstore

That's it for now. I'll be taking a break from blogging while I'm in Spain and France, but after I get back on June 22nd, expect to see a flood of travel sketches on my Art and Sketchbook blog!   And happy adventuring in art!

Cheers,
Susan
