Women Build gears up for construction with free clinic series
 |
| Jon Pudlitzke of Evergreen Handyman Services demonstrates siding at free clinic. | Back in May , we announced that Evergreen Habitat's women volunteers will be constructing an entire home for a 2011 partner family. To include women of all skill levels, Evergreen Habitat has teamed up with Lowe's to put on a series of Women Build clinics which cover basic construction techniques.
The free clinics began on July 9 and will be held each Saturday until August 13. The hands-on clinics run for two hours starting at 11 a.m. Topics to be covered in upcoming clinics include roofing, insulation and drywall, and finally, interior paint and trim.
"The clinics I've gone to have been so much fun; the women really help one another and the projects are big enough for everyone to be actively involved," said Terri Wayne, Habitat Women Build volunteer.
Attending the Women Build clinics is not required to participate in the build but anyone wanting to take part is encouraged to come out.
Anyone wishing to attend an upcoming clinic can call Evergreen Habitat at 360-737-1759, email Melissa@ehfh.org or visit our online registration page . |

Evergreen Habitat to break ground of final home in Patten Park

After months of anticipation and preparation to begin construction on the second home planned to begin in 2011, the ground breaking for the Lindsay Griffin family home will take place this Sunday, July 31 at 1:30 p.m. The symbolic ground breaking ceremony indicates that construction on the home will soon be underway.
The ceremony will be held at the site of the home; 7009 NE 98th Ave., Vancouver, WA. Evergreen Habitat will introduce the family and hold a ground blessing while participants enjoy refreshments. Wells Fargo sponsored the home and pledged volunteer hours towards its completion.
"I would like to thank Evergreen Habitat for Humanity for helping me realize my dream of owning a home," Griffin said. "Knowing my children and I will have a place that we can call home is something I will never be able to express enough gratitude for."
Evergreen Habitat will be celebrating a second milestone at this ceremony; the Griffin family home will be the final home built in the Patten Park development. Evergreen Habitat started work on the seven home sub-division in 2008. Twenty-six people will have permanent, stable housing in Patten Park once the 2011 builds are finished. Whether you volunteer frequently with Habitat, have thought about it or just want to come see our work, you are invited to come out and be part of the celebration.

Kristen Berry joins Evergreen Habitat for summer internship
 | |
Kristen Berry |
This summer we
welcome Kristen Berry,
a Bank of America student leader, as our intern.
She is a recent graduate of Columbia River High School and will be attending Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota in the fall.
Each year, we partner with the Bank of America student leader program and consider our affiliate very fortunate to have a summer intern of such extraordinary caliber for eight weeks.
Each student has to be an advocate for volunteering in their community. Kristen was very active in her high school community as member of the National Honor Society, president of a community service club called Interact, and member of the suicide prevention program. Last summer Kristen partnered with the non-profit Amigos de las Americas and spent seven weeks teaching environmental education in Ecuador. She is dedicated to serving and volunteering in both her Vancouver community and her international community.
Here at the office, she is active in working with the staff on the Women Build and is creating her own craft event fundraiser. She enjoys working for Habitat and is learning the ins and outs of working for a non-profit and the community it serves.

Volunteer Spotlight:
Leland Saele
 | |
Leland Saele
"Working with Habitat helps keep me active. I enjoy learning new skill and doing construction while helping families."
|
Before his retirement in 2007, Leland Saele worked as an engineer for the Department of Agriculture for 39 years. After moving to Vancouver from Texas, he wanted a way to put his technical skills to use.
A long-time member of Thrivent Financial, Leland is a veteran of community voluntarism. When he heard about Evergreen Habitat from a friend at church, he signed up and has been an avid Habitat volunteer since.
To thank all of our wonderful volunteers like Leland, Evergreen Habitat will be holding the Thank You BBQ on August 2.
