Poverty housing affects millions of women and children worldwide. Habitat for Humanity's Women Build program empowers women to take an active role in addressing women's housing needs. This summer, Evergreen Habitat plans to add to the over 1,800 homes that have been built by Habitat using all-female labor by holding a Women Build in Vancouver.

The build is open to teams and individuals. "The 'Women Build' program offers a comfortable environment for women to develop the skills that they already possess and cultivate those that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn," said Josh Townsley, executive director of EHFHF. Women of all skill levels are encouraged to take part in the construction of the Bastidas family home.

Registration information is available here. Habitat's Women Build Committee is looking for members. Email Josh at josh@ehfh.org if interested in helping plan and fundraise for the program.

New VISTA Volunteer Coordinator Joins the Staff of Evergreen Habitat

melissa carson

Welcome to Melissa Carson, who joined Evergreen Habitat as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer coordinator this May.

Melissa comes to us with a wealth of experience.

She previously was a VISTA with Destiny Foundation of Central Florida. Destiny served low-income people in need of jobs, food, and other services. There, she was a research analyst keeping track of program details and streamlining service systems so more clients could be served.

Melissa believes that you can change the world one person at a time. She started young volunteering with her mother at the Portland Rescue Mission. She is excited to be working for Evergreen Habitat for Humanity and looks forward to building alongside our volunteers. She's been impressed with how people in the community associate EHFH with great work and an excellent reputation from a national perspective.

"We're looking forward to celebrating all that the affiliate has accomplished in Clark County," said Josh Townsley, executive director of Evergreen Habitat for Humanity.

All proceeds from the event will directly support Evergreen Habitat for Humanity's homeownership program. With over 82.8% of low-income renters living in substandard housing, the need for Evergreen Habitat's program is as strong as ever. Evergreen Habitat has housed over 80 individuals since the affiliate began in 1991.

Melissa also has worked for political campaigns, the Salvation Army, and child-abuse prevention organization, Exchange Club Yellow Umbrella. A graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University, Melissa has a degree in Policy and Management.  Most recently she worked in Florida, but was glad to come to the Pacific Northwest where she has family.

Melissa's goals for the volunteer program are quite ambitious. Ultimately, she'd love the program to be self-sustaining and substantially automated. Making it easier for volunteers to sign up, get scheduled, and maximize their skill sets. She'd also like to increase the scope of what volunteers are able to do-especially with the 'A Brush With Kindness' program kicking off this year. In the short term, she looks forward to working with volunteers building houses this year.

Next time you are at an Evergreen Habitat event-whether it's a build, the Tool Box Bash, or our Raising the Roof Breakfast, be sure to introduce yourself to Melissa. And she will be sure that you are connected with volunteer opportunities that suit you best.

If you would like to contact Melissa about volunteer opportunities at Evergreen Habitat, she can be reached by emailing volunteer@ehfh.org or by calling 360-737-1759.
