"Championship Monday" has come to Cornerstone University!

Tonight, for the first time since 1999, the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles look to claim the WHAC tournament championship on the heels of winning the WHAC regular season title.

Aquinas College visits Mol Arena tonight for a 7:30pm showdown to determine the WHAC's 2010 Men's Basketball Tournament Champion.  At stake is an automatic berth in the NAIA's 32-team national tournament which begins next week in Branson, Missouri.  Tickets are available at the door.

Cornerstone, which clinched the WHAC regular season crown on February 20th at Davenport, earned a spot in the title game with a 100-77 triumph over Siena Heights in  Saturday's semifinal.   Meanwhile, also on Saturday, Aquinas upset Davenport 55-53 to punch their ticket to tonight's tilt.

The neighborhood rivals have already met three times this year with Cornerstone winning all three including a two-point win in November's Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic Championship game.   The Golden Eagles own an overall record of 26-6 and finished the WHAC season at 12-2.   The Saints are 21-11 overall with a conference mark of 9-5.

Senior standout John Lierman paces Aquinas with 18.4ppg.    Kelvin DeVries, fresh off a 32-point performance on Saturday, leads (12.9ppg) a balanced Cornerstone attack that features four players averaging over ten points per game.

"We're elated to have earned the right to play a championship game on our home court," said Cornerstone coach Kim Elders, who was named the league's Coach-of-the-Year last week.   "We encourage the entire Cornerstone community to come out and see what should be a terrific championship game!"
