Spring 2010
The new year is off to a great start at
Houston Habitat for Humanity!

First, congratulations to the entire Houston Habitat team for winning the prestigious ENERGY STARŪ award for the third year in a row.  This achievement speaks to the organization's longstanding dedication to integrating energy efficiency into our affordable homes.

Houston Habitat kicked off 2010 with the grand opening of our newest community, Milby Park, in Northwest Houston and a "dynamic" partnership with Houston Dynamo star Brian Ching and Dynamo Charities.  And last--but far from least--I am excited to report that we have raised $750,000 toward the Houston Endowment's $1 million matching grant for land and development, a critical, long-term objective that the organization must reach to continue to meet the growing need for affordable housing in our community.

We hope that you will continue to be a part of the Houston Habitat family by making a donation, picking up a hammer and advocating for safe, quality and affordable homes in your community.

Sincerely,

Algenita Davis
Executive Director, Houston Habitat

Houston Habitat Celebrates a New Look and a New Community with Grand Opening

On February 6, four Houston Habitat homebuyer families celebrated their official homecoming at an emotional dedication ceremony. In addition to the Cartwright, Guerra, Hernandez and Hudson families, home sponsors Chevron, ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil and U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee were in attendance. Milby Hart, Houston Habitat's first executive director and the namesake for Milby Park, also gave moving remarks about Houston Habitat's legacy and exciting future.

The development of Milby Park is part of an ongoing effort to revitalize a historic area of northeast Houston and marks a new opportunity for families to live the American Dream during difficult financial times.  The homes showcase Houston Habitat's "new look" and feature brick facades, covered porches and Energy Star appliances. Upon completion, Milby Park will be a 62-home mixed-income subdivision.

The House that Ching Built

Brian ChingHouston Dynamo and U.S. National Team star Brian Ching, in partnership with Dynamo Charities, has committed to raising $75,000 to build a Houston Habitat home for a hard-working, low-income family. Ching has made an initial donation to jumpstart the fundraising and hopes that the remaining donations will come from everyday Houstonians, in a grassroots effort to make owning a home a reality for a deserving family.

"I have been blessed during my life, and Houston has been very good to me," Ching said. "Partnering with Houston Habitat and Dynamo Charities is a way that I can give back to the community that has supported me, while also helping a family get the quality housing that they deserve. I want all of Houston to feel like they are part of this important project."
