A Message from the Foundation PresidentKenAnderson

We are well into our first quarter of 2011 but,   I wanted to share some of the noteworthy highlights for our foundation from last year.

- Thanks to the generosity of more than 2,800 dedicated donors, the foundation raised $1.8 million dollars.  This terrific response validates how vital our Providence ministries are to local communities.

 - More than $1.3 million dollars was distributed to support local Providence programs, services, and facilities. More than $700,000 in internal grants was approved for expenditure some of which will be completed this year.

- Our 23rd annual Christmas Forest was, once again, a tremendous success. Special thanks to our title sponsor Titus-Will Chevrolet, Cadillac, Hyundai and the Gala sponsor Surgical Associates.  Christmas Forest simply would not be possible if we did not have more than 350 enthusiastic volunteers and sponsors who work to provide such a great holiday experience.

-  The annual Providence Employee Giving campaign raised a record $227,000 in pledges and gifts from 700 employees at Providence St. Peter Hospital, Providence Mother Joseph Care Center, Providence Medical Group and Providence SoundHomeCare & Hospice.

- The foundation board achieved its' goal of creating a $10 million endowment. Earnings from this fund support the greatest needs through our annual fall and spring internal grant cycles. We are grateful to the donors and past and current board members who made this accomplishment possible. Our needs are always greater than our resources so we will continue to set our sites on raising more for the good work of Providence.

Watch for further news in the foundation's annual report later this spring. Thank you for helping us to support the needs of the poor and vulnerable through the compassionate service provided through Providence.

Sincerely,

Celebrating Mother Joseph Day on April 16

"Everyday I renew my oblation, happy to have sacrificed all for love of the interests of our sweet Jesus who more and more holds me captive..."

- Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart, December 27, 1858

On this birth date of Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart, born in 1823 asMotherJoseph Esther Pariseau, the Sisters of Providence of Mother Joseph Province; the employees, volunteers, and supporters of its sponsored ministries; and the people of Washington State celebrate and honor the spirit and legacy of this humble visionary.

Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart was a distinctive figure of early Northwest history, a woman of extraordinary compassion and vision. Blessed with a keen mind and a complex personality, she strove for perfection in all things while embracing the challenges of an all-too-imperfect world.

When Mother Joseph arrived in the Washington Territory in 1856, she encountered a strange, new world of physical hardships, cultural and religious diversity, and rapid change. There were no hospitals, few schools, and little in the way of charitable services for those suffering the misfortunes of life on the frontier.

Equipped with simple tools, enormous gifts for creating and building, and deep faith in Divine Providence, Mother Joseph and her sister companions stepped into the breach to fill these unmet needs. Under her leadership, more than 30 hospitals, schools and homes were opened for orphans, the elderly, and the sick in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and southern British Columbia.

In 1999 a group of sixth-grade students from Vancouver, Washington, cradle of the religious community in the American West, petitioned the state legislature to declare this day as Mother Joseph Day. The bill passed unanimously.

Mother Joseph's commitment to serve everyone in need continues to be carried out in the challenging health care world of today. Good works endure.  Read more ...
