Greetings!
Is anyone else happy January is over??? After getting stuck in the major snowstorm in New York last week, and nearly getting stuck again by the Midwestern blizzard this week, I'm ready for spring!! (Quite happy I get to visit south Texas in a couple weeks though for UT Austin!!)
I'm doing a special send out of Timely Tips today to help support my good friend Tony Rubleski (who also happened to write the foreword for my book, Taming the E-mail Beast), as he launches his third MindCapture book today. I just posted this review on Amazon.com of his new book after reading an advance copy:
"Tony,
I just finished reading your book cover to cover. Bravo! Exactly the message needed for this uncertain, negative, fearful time. You have clearly, eloquently, and succinctly tapped into the amazing ability, creativity, and power we all inherently have inside of us to not only survive the "fear" culture, but thrive in it as successful and contributing individuals and business owners/professionals. Everybody in marketing, sales, advertising, "the media", senior management, and entrepreneurship of any sort should read your book and apply your lessons and systems to their work, their life, and their personal and professional passions. Thanks for a positive mental/emotional kick in the pants!
Yours truly,
Randy Dean, MBA
Author of the recent Amazon #1 e-mail bestseller, Taming the E-mail Beast"
Tony has written a book that any of us who have been soured by the recent economy and the incessant harping of negativity by the media should read. He reminds us that it is not the economy or the media that determines our mood or success -- it is us!! And then he gives some tangible exercises to get out of the doldrums and get back after it. I do recommend you go to his book information page today, and get a copy. He's also collected some outstanding bonuses -- it will be worth your time to visit this page and get this book.
Now that I'm done helping a good friend who wrote a great book, let's give you a great new Killer Keystroke Combo to add to your list:

New "Killer Keystroke Combo" -- Windows+F
| This is ALWAYS the place to look for your Timely Tip!
A big thanks to the program attendee at this week's session that shared this great new Killer Keystroke Combo: Windows + F. If you hold down the "Windows" key and then hit F, it brings up a full computer search tool. This search window allows you to search "All" items, "E-mail", "Documents", "Pictures", "Music", and "Other".
This is a super handy way to find a file of any sort, and refine the search by using the categories above. There is even an option to do a more advanced search by using the tool to the far right of the screen.
Test this one out -- I expect it will become a standard tool in your "computing arsenal". ;-) |
Another great reader tip -- Google Docs for users of older versions of MS Office
| Another reader commented on the online tool, Docx2doc.com, that I recommended a few months ago. As a reminder, this tool allows you to convert the new Microsoft Office files that have those pesky "x's" at the end (docx, xlsx, pptx, etc.) into older versions so you can still read and edit these files when using an older version of Office (I'm not a big fan of Microsoft for making this "little" change.)
Well, apparently, you can open these same kinds of "x documents" just by using Google Docs now. Simply go to Google Docs, upload the file, and it should open beautifully for you. Now, if you prefer to still work on the file in Office, you can simply copy and paste from the Google Docs file into Word, Excel, etc. Or, just save to one of those preferred versions in Google Docs. Thanks to both Google Docs AND my Timely Tips readers for continuing to share these great tips and features! |

Ready for Spring
I hope that you all have had a chance to "dig out" from the recent storms, and will soon be warming up again soon. As you look out the window at the mounds of snow and the cold air, remember, the days are getting longer, the sun is getting stronger, and spring will be here soon! (That being said, for many of you in the northern part of the U.S., what a great time to find that sled hill, skating pond, and/or ski slope!)
Remember, as author Parker Palmer says, "The winters will drive you crazy until you get out into them." Throw on those boots and snow pants and go have some fun! Until next time, Stay Timely! Sincerely,

Taming Your "Meeting Monsters"
| I came across this great little article on how to "tame" certain personality types that like to derail your meetings on the American Management Association web site. It is a great complement to the information that I share in my Managing & Leading Great Staff & Team Meetings program.
If you regularly plan and lead meetings, I recommend you check this article out -- good stuff! |

Plenty of Public and University Courses Coming Up!
| |
I'll be doing a large number of public and university courses coming up. Due to the weather from January, I've actually had two U. Michigan HRD courses pushed into next week.
On Wednesday, February 9, I'll be leading my Taming the E-mail & Info Overload Beasts programs for UM HRD (note the different title for U. Michigan.)
On Thursday, February 10, I'll be leading my popular "Finding an Extra Hour Every Day" Time & Outlook Management program. If you are a U. Michigan staffer, you could get all of my best "stuff" on two back-to-back afternoons. Worth a look!
I'm also scheduled to lead my popular "Optimizing Your Outlook" session at MSU HRD on February 15 and my Taming the E-mail Beast session on March 2. If you have an interest in finding out about availability for this course, contact HRD at 517-355-0183 or hrd@hr.msu.edu.
On February 24th, I'll be leading three different sessions for the AGC Michigan Professional Development Day in Livonia, Michigan (near Detroit).
In March, I'll be a featured speaker at a big community program led by Central Michigan University's Technology Group. I'll also be speaking at several other public events in Chicago and Iowa in March & April, and will be sharing more information on these events in next month's Timely Tips.
And of course, I'll be a featured presenter at Carol Grainger's Speaker Showcase on March 28th as discussed above. | |
