News from Guatemala
New Hope teachers travel to Chicago
In December, New Hope Director Mynor Lemus, four teachers from New Hope School, and Renato Westby, Program Development Director, traveled to the Chicago area for a teacher exchange with Hubbard Woods School in Winnetka, IL. Teachers from Hubbard Woods had traveled to Guatemala this summer as the first phase of the teacher exchange.

The experience was very memorable for all involved. Writes New Hope teacher Leslie Murga, "I have lived one of the rarest moments of my professional career. Being here, I have seen in a new light the magnitude of what we are doing, how our daily efforts are making a difference and contributing a grain of sand toward the building of our country. Being immersed in work, in the daily routine, one doesn't observe such things! Watching the video the Hubbard Woods teachers took while at New Hope, where they made a comparison between what we both do every day ... there aren't many differences, but it motivated me to achieve more, with more enthusiasm, to give my best every day, so that when someone else comes to visit us like we are, they will see us serving others with great love, as we have seen them doing."

Victoriano needs a Sponsor
Victoriano is 13 years old and plans to start seventh grade in February, the beginning of the 2010 GuatemalanVictor school year. Victoriano lives with his family in Antigua, however they come from Uspantán Quiché, a Mayan community. The family moved to Antigua 11 years ago to seek a better life.

Victoriano lives with his parents and seven siblings in a small room made of cornstalk that holds four beds. Victoriano's father has a full-time job cleaning the Antigua market grounds. He works from 5-11 p.m. and earns about $175 per month. The family is hard-working and responsible. All five school-age children are attending school, setting a great example for their younger three siblings.

If you can donate $30 or $60 each month (just $1-2 per day) to support Victoriano's education, please contact Jessie at (651) 917-1045 or jessies@us.commonhope.org.

Recent graduate speaks about his inspiration
Manuel graduated from high school in November 2009 and is now an accountant during the day.  In addition to his career accomplishments, Manuel is already giving back -- he volunteers in the evenings with functionally illiterate adults to teach them how to read.

A video of Manuel was taken last October when his Sponsor came for a visit. The conversation was translated into both English and Spanish.  Click here to view the conversation with Manual.

Thank you for a strong 2009
Thank you to everyone who supported Common Hope in 2009 and helped us to conclude the year on strong financial footing. The holiday season started off well with Give to the Max Day, sponsored by GiveMN.org. Common Hope raised $37,000 that day, which rose to nearly $50,000 raised on the site by the end of the year. Your generosity continued throughout the holiday season, helping us to meet our adjusted plan for 2009. As expected given the recession, we ended the year 15% behind our original revenue plan, but proactive expense management early in the year put us more than 16% behind plan on expenses.

Being able to contribute to our reserves has put us in a solid position for modest program growth in 2010. We will welcome 2,700 students to the 2010 school year, compared to 2,576 in 2009. And, we will launch a new Education Partner School Initiative, providing support to two local schools through tutoring, teacher training, classroom supplies, and more. The initiative is the beginning of more concerted work to address education quality in Guatemala. Stay tuned for more information on this in our upcoming print newsletter.
Book club gives the gift of books
Book ClubFor more than 20 years at their annual Christmas meeting, the Cohasset, MA Book Club held a gift exchange. After reading "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson several years ago, about one man's mission to start schools in remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, they started a new tradition. Now, the group collects the amount previously spent on gifts and donates it to a charity.

Common Hope was fortunate to receive the group's 2009 donation. After perusing Common Hope's Gift Catalog, the group decided, naturally, to give the gift of books. Writes club member Kay Mixon, "The information that many children in Guatemala live in homes without books was a primary motivator for us as book lovers."

The Cohasset Book Club was founded more than 30 years ago and consists of 11 women, many of whom were at the original meeting in 1978. Kay says they still have a gift exchange, but now with "white elephant" gifts which always bring a lot of fun and laughter to the event.

You Can Help
Toothbrushes and toothpaste needed
Our January need of the month is 3,000 toothbrushes and toothpaste. These supplies will support our dental clinic's efforts to promote preventive dental care in the communities where our affiliated families live.

Your supply collections help Common Hope to provide opportunities for students and families in Guatemala while saving thousands of dollars that can be directed toward other pressing program needs. Last year, you helped us to meet our supply drive goals for crayons, erasers, pencils, black pens, rulers, and toothbrushes, and we collected hundreds of supplies for our other needs. Thank you!

Please help us reach our goal.
