Arbor Week 2011
On April 4th 2011, Portland Parks & Recreation celebrated Portland's 34th Arbor Day in the South Park Blocks. Over 50 people gathered to celebrate Portland's trees, enduring the ¾-inch of rainfall with pastries and hot coffee to keep warm.
The City Arborists, who did not think twice about the rain, provided canopy tours of the magnificent elm trees in the South Park Blocks. City Forester David McAllister and Urban Forestry Commission chair Joe Poracsky were presented with the Tree City USA Award from Ries Paul, Community Forester with the Oregon Department of Forestry.
Thank you to our partners, Bureau of Environmental Services, Friends of Trees, Friends of Hoyt Arboretum, and Parks Environmental Education for providing tree education information. Special thanks to East Sylvan Neighborhood Tree Steward Bryan Burch who led everyone in the Arbor Day Proclamation, complete with audience participation.
The weather improved after Arbor Day, with sunny skies for the Couch Park Tree Walk with Phyllis Reynolds. Other notable Arbor Week events include Joe Mendez and Jayne Lacey's technical tree pruning class on the 6th, the magnolia tree walk with Hoyt Arboretum curator Martin Nicholson, and the SE Portland tree bike ride with NTS volunteer Emily Wilson and Jennifer Karps of BES.

Stephen Peacock (Urban Forestry Commission), David McAllister (City Forester), Jenifer Karps (BES), Astrid Dragoy and Nancy Harger (Portland Parks & Recreation) and Kris Day (Friends of Trees) all help out to plant a Accolade Elm in the South Park Blocks to Celebrate Arbor Day
