Try This: It's New It's Different
Here are two titles to try when you are ready to try something a little bit different.
Chew: Taster's Choice by John Layman and Rob Guillilory definitely is an acquired taste. This winner of the 2010 Eisner Award for best new series tells the story of Tony Chu, a police detective who is a cibopath. This means that he has a special ability to get psychic impressions from the food he eats and has been assigned as to the FDA Special Crimes Division. Things get really interesting when he falls in love with a food critic, who also has her own special talent: she can write about food and make it sound so distasteful that readers will actually become physically ill when they read her reports. How will Tony use his abilities? Will romance blossom in such a tainted atmosphere? Will you ever be able to eat again?
A few years ago Absolute Brightness by James Lescene was a title selected for the Suffolk/Nassau Mock Printz. Fans of Lescene will be excited to read his latest title, Virgin Territory. Dylan is stuck in Jupiter Florida with his dad, where things have not been going too well. He has managed to get a summer job as a golf caddy where an interesting turn of events introduces him to the BVM club. Dylan struggles with pain, loss, denial, and faith. Lescene had me laughing, empathizing, and quoting passages such as "Guess every one of us is in need of some kind of miracle." and "'You didn't mention you had a girlfriend.' He emphasizes the word girlfriend by drawing it out and making it go on for about a week. Even after he's finished saying it, the word continues to echo in my ears." Like Leonard, Dylan is a character I will not soon forget.

 Film Making Workshop
Here is a great opportunity for tweens to learn the basics of film making. Workshops, held at an Apple store, span 3 days where kids ages 8-12 can learn to create their own movies. While the workshop is free, campers must bring their own camera. Attendees will learn to use iMovie software and participate in a Film Festival. Workshops are offered at both Lake Grove and Huntington Station locations.
