Be sure to  submit your videos and Scratch projects to SCLS Youth Services by August 27.

A special attraction for the September 1 Media Festival will be a presentation on adding sound to film and  creating sound tracks. John Machado, professor of Audio Recording and Audio Division Co-Chair at Five Towns College will be our guest speaker.

Teen media just keeps getting better and better! Come see and share.

Greetings!
Summer is officially here and that means we're all swimming in Summer Reading Programs. Don't forget to keep filming all the exciting things happening this summer at your library.
Two months remain to complete your Scratch and FLIP camera projects.  Entry forms for the Teen Media Festival will be sent to all YA librarians next month.

All My Best,
Barbara

Planning an Author Event
North Shore Public Library hosted an outstanding authorMaryrose Wood & North Shore Improv Teens event. Approximately one hundred forty tweens and teens were delighted with a presentation by Maryrose Wood, author of The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place and The Poison Dairies. Here are some tips from Katherine Welch and Lori Blend for creating a successful author event:
  • Enlist support from library staff members.
  • Visit local schools to promote your event.
  • Create interest with a large lobby poster.
  • Make a book available for each attendee. The Friends of the Library and a family memorial gift ensured that every teen and tween left with a signed copy of The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place. Make this part of your promotion.
  • Plan for staff assistance during the event. Katherine introduced the speaker and supervised the refreshments. Lori organized the book signing, distributing copies of the book and book signing slips. Pages organized the signing request forms for Maryrose, served cake and poured juice.
Due to careful planning and promotion, this event was a hit with the North Shore community. Thanks for inviting me. I had a wonderful time!

Additional photos of Maryrose Wood's visit to North Shore may be viewed at SCLS Teen Tour.

Sweeping Sagas

Some novels so perfectly capture a time and place that readers completely fall under the story's spell. Here are two recent books that worked their magic on me.

Andi Alpers lives in a gritty Brooklyn world. She has watched Revolution coverhelplessly as her brother is killed, her mother detaches completely from life, her father leaves home, and her own sanity unravels. An intricate silver key, a secret diary from the French Revolution, and a trip to Paris trigger Andi's personal revolution. Jennifer Donnelly's Revolution transports readers from twenty-first century New York to eighteenth century France. Donnelly based her captivating tale on the tiny embalmed heart of young Prince-Louis Charles. "Every heart is made of stories."

Reckless coverDo you believe in magic forests and evil witches? You will once you enter the world of Cornelia Funke's Reckless.
Two brothers, Will and Jacob have discovered a mirror which holds the power to send them into another world populated by Goyl with bodies of stone: onyx, amber, and jade. Will becomes one of the Goyl and his brother Jacob must go through the mirror to rescue his brother. Will they survive the Dark Fairy who "turns her enemies into the wine she drinks"? Readers will savor this fairy tale homage to the Brothers Grimm.

Please consult the SCLS Professional Collection for a complete listing of all titles available for examination.
