Patchogue Medford Chicks with Sticks
I recently had the honor of receiving an invitation to join Patchogue teens knitJeri Cohen and her teen knitting group. The girls are a diverse group and are involved in knitting, crocheting, and spinning. It was fun to join them for a monthly meeting. Fortunately that night they needed someone to wind balls of yarn, and I can do that. This is a fun group which meets monthly with support from a local fiber artist in addition to the craftswoman/librarian in residence at Patchogue Medford Public Library. Thanks for a delightful evening !

Time for Some Fun Stuff!

Time for summer. Time to put the textbooks away and read something just for fun! Here are two new titles to try.

I knew that I was in trouble when I started laughing out loud while Vordak coverreading  Vordak the Incomprehensible: How to Grow Up and Rule the World. Scott Seegert, AKA Vordak, has created the ultimate guide for all those with a secret (or not so secret) ambition to rule the world. Here's a sample of the guide's contents:  "Evil Aptitude Exam", "Three Ways to Make a Girl Scout Cry", perfecting your evil laugh, an "Evil Name Generator",  and tips for building a Lair. Illustrations such as "Sinister Syd's Evil Accessories" make this one book for the evil lurking in each one of us! Trust me, being bad has never been so much fun!

Grounded coverWhen I heard Jean Feiwel describe this as the book that "puts the fun in funeral", I was immediately intrigued. Grounded by Kate Klise is the story of Daralynn, or Dolly, whose mother styles hair and makeup for bodies at a local mortuary. Set in a small Missouri  town that is filled with "quirky" characters, including the grandmother who likes to play with Daralynn's 237 dolls, Aunt Josie who hosts a retirement home for "distinguished gentlemen", and Clem, the man who wants to open a crematorium. This gentle story of humor, loss, and the power of family make it the perfect summer read!

Please consult the SCLS Professional Collection for a complete listing of all titles available for examination.
Accent on Book Expo America

Cornelia FunkeBook Expo America was a tremendous event.  I was delighted to see so many Suffolk librarians in attendance.

BEA highlights for me were hearing two absolutely mesmerizing storytellers:
Cornelia Funke, author of Reckless recounting in her soft German accent  the creation of her latest work which was translated from German into English.
Suzanne Collins
Suzanne Collins, author of Mockingjay has a soft Southern accent which works perfectly with the character of Katniss. When she pulled out the manuscript for the third volume of the Hunger Games trilogy, an audible gasp went out from the audience.

Talk about two true blonde bombshells!
