Summer Reading in New York

SCLS will host a support group meeting for those librarians who will be using the online summer reading registration software this summer. Come join your fellow librarians as we share ideas and information about using this product. We will meet for an informal "Brown Bag" lunch on May 5 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Call Tracy McQuade 286-1600 x 1327 to indicate your interest.

If you are interested in obtaining summer reading certificates, bookmarks, or other downloadables, please contact SCLS-YS.

Greetings!
Summer is almost here!  The programs are planned, the prizes ordered. Not long now.
If you are considering Evanced online reading registration please join us for the informal support group lunch discussion.

Don't forget to get those Flip camcorders out and start recording all your teens' summer fun.  You will want to enter the Teen Film Festival.  There will be some great prizes given away at that event.

All My Best,
Barbara

Teens Rule in Hampton Bays

Something good is always happening in the Teen Hampton Bays Teen DepartmentDepartment at Hampton Bays Public Library. Theresa Owens and her staff have created a welcoming spot for local teens. Note the custom-decorated pillars painted by a page.
Hampton Bays recently celebrated its 50th birthday with a special birthday bash just for teens. But the fun doesn't stop there. Check out the Teen Blog to find out more fun stuff. While you're there, be sure to view the HBAY Music Mania video. It's so much fun to be a teen at Hampton Bays!

Additional photos of Hampton Bays Teen Department may be viewed at SCLS Teen Tour.

And Now For Something Different...

Looking for a break from paranormal romance,  steampunk, and gritty realism? Try these titles:.

Stephen Wellenfels' Pod has got to be one of the best nail-biting, hold-you-in-its-grip science Pod coverfiction thrillers I have encountered in some time.
On the day that strange spinning black spheres fill the sky, life on earth changes forever. The story unfolds through alternating voices: Megs, a twelve year old girl trapped alone in a parking garage with a kitten, a gun, and three deranged killers; and sixteen year old Josh, trapped in his home with an obsessive compulsive father and dwindling food. This is the ultimate survival story: Independence Day meets Life as We Knew It meets Wait Until Dark. Once you stop, you will not be able to put this one down. It's that good!

The Cardturner coverLouis Sachar, author of Holes has turned his attention to a totally different topic: bridge. Yes, that's right, the game of old people takes a turn for teens in The Cardturner. Alton's parents, hoping for an inheritance, enlist their son to assist his crusty old blind uncle by turning cards for him at games and tournaments. Sachar's signature combination of humor, quirky characters, and mystical elements combine to tell a coming-of age story. Some in-depth explanation of bridge rules and strategy are included within the story. However, Sachar has thoughtfully provided a visual device for readers who would prefer to stick to the storyline without card-playing specifics. An enjoyable read with a satisfying not-too-neat ending. It is obvious that Sachar is still at the top of his games: both bridge and YA lit.

Please consult the SCLS Professional Collection for a complete listing of all titles available for examination.
Looking for Community Service Ideas?

For teens needing community service hours, here are a few new options to consider:

Best Buy has an electronics recycling program . Teens might make collection containers and post flyers throughout the community advertising a collection of used electronics. What a great way to combine teens and recycling!

We Give Books invites young readers to read a book online with a buddy, and then select a charity to receive a book donation. Teens could read online with buddies, and then help the child select a charity to receive a book donation. What a great concept: books, reading,  community service, and technology!

Mockingjay logo

The countdown has started!  Set your calendars for August 24 and begin planning now for activities to capitalize on Hunger Games fever. Visit the official mockingjay website.  SCLS will also compile a list of activities to use with the release of the final book in this popular trilogy.
