The Battle of 2009
On Saturday August 15, teams from thirty-seven Suffolk County Public Libraries competed in the Suffolk Cooperative Library System's thirteenth annual Battle of the Books. Javits Lecture Center, located on the campus of Stony Brook University was filled with costumed teens ready to share their knowledge of eight books.
Later that evening Hauppauge Public Library won the championship! Congratulations to our finalists: Babylon Public Library, Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, and Hampton Bays Public Library.
Thanks to all of the teens, coaches, parents, and library staff who worked so hard to make Battle of the Books a memorable event.

Mystery and Intrigue
Several interesting graphic titles have crossed my desk this past month. Filled with murder, mystery and intrigue these titles are just my "cup of tea."
Pluto by Naoki Urasawa introduces readers to Gesicht, an agent with Europol. Both Gesicht and his wife Helena have the appearance of humans, but are robots. Called to investigate the first murder in eight years, the detective uncovers a series of both human and robot murders. Gesicht begins to suspect that a robot may be responsible for this series of deaths. Great characters and riveting plot make Pluto manga and mystery at its best. Here is one series to get hooked on!
Bodart and Vehlmann's Green Manor: Assassins and Gentlemen continues the fine celebral tradition of Arthur Conan Doyle's depiction of "murder most foul." English gentlemen meet at the Green Manor Club to debate the question: "Do you believe that there can be a murder without a victim and without a murderer?" One after another, members begin to regale the club with strange stories of murders. Was there a murderer? Was there a body? Keep reading for an interesting twist at the end!
Got teens who like comics, graphic novels, and manga? Got teens who like to share their opinions? If so, consider hosting a Great Graphic Novel critique session. Contact Barbara Moon for details.
Please consult the SCLS Professional Collection for a complete listing of all titles available for examination.
