Camping Out in Westhampton
While the new Westhampton Free Library is under construction, residents are enjoying the temporary facility located nearby.
I joined Youth Services librarians Nola Thacker and Dave Jones in a tour of the library and teen area. It is amazing how creative planning can make even a small place a great space for teens. Congratulations Dave and Nola!

Little Brother
I attended a performance of Little Brother. While remaining true to the theme, plot, and characters of Doctorow's young adult novel, the stage adaptation required modifications. The tension between freedom of expression and the need for personal privacy that played such a dominant role in the book were not as prominent in the stage production.
The sets quickly moved the audience between home, school, outdoors, and prison with chain link gates, fold-down benches, and a back screen displaying projected media images. I was thrilled to sit directly in front of Cory Doctorow as he viewed the play for the first time. Following the performance the author, the director, the playwright and eventually the cast came onstage for a discussion with the audience. One theme which I felt the audience failed to recognize was the empowerment that technology gives to teens. A thought-provoking play and discussion. Worth viewing.
I left with a playbill autographed by Doctorow!

Heart of the Matter
"A
heart's a heart, in a child or a man. You are tougher than you feel right
now." Rinna from Forest Born
This month I enjoyed some wonderful stories coming of age stories. If you are looking for a very special heart-warming stories, consider these titles. Shannon Hale's Forest Born continues the Bayern series with the story of Razo's sister Rinna. Running away from her past, she enters court life and becomes embroiled in a war of neighboring lands. As the battle for power between the two kingdoms rages, Rin faces her personal battle with good and bad. While the story can stand alone, many characters from Hale's previous Bayern books reappear in Rin's story. The final scenes of conflict, with a vicious villain against the fire sisters, had me on the edge of my seat. What a rich and satisfying story!
Rosanne Parry's Heart of a Shepherd introduces readers to Ignatius, youngest of five brothers and living on the family's Oregon ranch. Life changes dramatically when his father is deployed to Iraq. Left with his Quaker grandfather and a Ecuadoran shepherd to work the ranch, Brother, as he is known, struggles to care for the ranch and its livestock. He also must come to grips with death, the ravanges of war, his relationship with his brothers, and ultimately his own faith. A wonderful story to savor!
Please consult the SCLS Professional Collection for a complete listing of all titles available for examination.
