Greetings!
Many publishers have been marketing to libraries in unique ways. This month's issue of Teen Direct introduces a few of those marketing techniques. Take a look at a few of the marketing samples featured in this newsletter and let me know what you think.

Welcome to Elwood

Elwood Teen ShelvesElwood Seating

Elwood Public Library has moved to a new space! After years in a cramped storefront location, Eileen Murphy has created a welcoming space where teens may sit and relax, enjoy a book or a play a game. This spacious new area is fresh and brimming with possibilities. When she brought out the box with Battle of the Books titles, her teens were all over them, enjoying the space they had to spread out and read.

Nearby, Eileen has filled shelves with popular books for teens, including a nice collection of manga and graphic novels. She has been carefully monitoring circulation. When she finds a title is not circulating well with teens, she considers moving the title to another department.  She finds that often a book that does not appeal to teens might be interesting to children.

I visited Elwood when teens were studying for finals.  Eileen decided to reserve a study room just for teens during specific times.  Great idea Eileen!

A Shout-Out to Librarians

Here are two new titles which feature some great librarians and great quotes about books and libraries.

Nothing But Ghost coverBeth Kephart is one of my favorite authors and her latest book continues the great tradition of excellent YA fiction which began with Undercover.  Nothing But Ghosts introduces readers to Katie, living alone in the big house with her father. The house now seems bigger and emptier since the death of her mother. Katie has pulled away from her friends and decides to spend the summer working on the grounds of an estate. Katie discovers a mystery associated with the estate and seeks to find answers to her questions. Her search takes her to the public library where she meets the glamorous librarian Ms. McDermott. This role model is everything I want to be: fashion savvy, helpful without being intrusive, the perfect friend for Katie. "Books don't make a bit of difference, unless somebody reads them searching for something." Great book! Great librarian!

The wait is over. Frank Portman's latest novel Andromeda Klein isAndromeda Klein cover here and it is worth the wait.  Andromeda is a tarot aficionado and library page. Filled with references to the occult, lots of clever plays on words and hilarious scenes, this book  was unfamiliar territory for me and required some thought and research. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book: loved the characters, the language, the setting.  Join Andromeda in The House of Bookcakes for great quotes such as:"Books could get her excited, not just reading them but touching them...Living with them or around them could influence and transform your world."

Please consult the SCLS Professional Collection for a complete listing of all titles available for examination. Online reviews by Suffolk librarians also available at Paperback Preview.

 Teens Top Ten
YALSA now offers downloadable bookmarks (PDF file) featuring the 2009 Teens' Top Ten nominees for librarians to distribute to teens at their libraries. The bookmarks feature the 25 titles nominated for this year's list of favorite books. Teen readers are encouraged to read the nominees throughout the summer, then vote for their favorite titles starting August 24. The online poll closes on September 18, and winners will be announced in a webcast during Teen Read Week, October 18-24.
