The month of October is Children's Health Month. Children follow the example set by their parents. It's that simple. If you want your child to live a healthy, long life, active movement
must be a part of their everyday activities. But fitness is only one aspect that contributes to your child's well-being. Dr. Greg Welk, assistant professor of Health and Human Performance from Iowa State University, has
10 questions every parent should ask themselves.
The month of October also is Eat Better, Eat Together Month. What better example can you set for your children than modeling good eating habits? Limit sugar and salt intake (and yes, that means very little to no soft drinks), prepare more meals at home with fresh fruits and veggies and keep those fast food stops under control. But that's just half the effort. Studies show that families who eat together have healthier, happier children.
And, finally,
the month of October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Everyone knows someone who has been touched by this terrible disease. It might even be you. Collect yogurt tops, participate in
Des Moines' Race for the Cure on Saturday, Oct. 23, or let that special someone know GPS offers the
Pink Ribbon Program for post-operative rehabilitation.
