Keep the Change...  a monthly shot in the arm for your fundraising March 2012
Greetings!

Pop quiz!  (I've always wanted to say that.)

I did a quiz once before on donor relations and it was quite popular. So this month, I've got another one for you... It's about your board. And, of course, fundraising.

Don't worry if you don't do so well. I know you're not alone.

Just be sure to come back next month so I can tell you how to improve things with your board (and your score on the quiz!).

Enjoy,

  Tina

23-Question Quiz: How effectively are you engaging your board members in fundraising?

Engaging board members in fundraising is one of the most common struggles nonprofits face. But where specifically do the problems lie?

This quick quiz will help you find out. And hopefully give you some ideas for things you could be doing differently.

For each statement, please answer: Always, Sometimes or Never.

Keep a tally of how many responses you have in each category. You ready?

Here you go...
  1. Each board member donates every year.
  2. Board meetings are well attended.
  3. Each board member helps with fundraising in a meaningful way each year.
  4. There are members on the board who are comfortable soliciting gifts face-to-face.
  5. There are members on the board who help plan events.
  6. Board members attend special events and talk with guests, not each other.
  7. The development staff can contact board members directly to discuss fundraising issues.
  8. Board members help to identify potential supporters.
  9. An organizational fundraising plan is/was created with board participation.
  10. Board members cultivate relationships with donors outside of their giving.
  11. Contacts of board members are cultivated as prospects and connected to the organization itself before asked to give.
  12. Board members have job descriptions that detail the fundraising responsibilities that come with being on the board.
  13. Board members are given time to catch up with each informally during board meetings.
  14. Board members are regularly thanked in meaningful ways.
  15. The work taken on by board members is well-suited to their individual talents and skills.
  16. The board receives regular training on trends, new developments, and best practices in fundraising.
  17. Time is taken at board meetings to connect with why we're inspired by the work of organization.
  18. Board members personally thank donors.
  19. Board members have many ways to be involved in fundraising.
  20. Board members understand what's expected of them when it comes to fundraising.
  21. Board members make individual fundraising plans for themselves each year.
  22. Board members are given a chance to talk about how they really feel about fundraising.
  23. Board meeting are interactive with lots of discussion and decision-making, and minimal formal presentations or reporting.

So, how did you do? Which category -- Always, Sometimes or Never -- got the most responses? The least?

Are you wondering what some of these questions even have to do with fundraising?

Well, come back next month and I'll explain...

I'll also give you some tips for what you can do to get your board more engaged in fundraising.

See you in April!
