BREAKING NEWS!
"M" TO RECEIVE 2012 MWA 'RAVEN' AWARD!

Today marks 15 years from the day that we first opened the doors of our original little shop down the street. This morning the Mystery Writers of America announced via press release that we will be honored with a 2012 Raven Award at the annual Edgar Award dinner on April 26, 2012 in New York. The Raven Award honors one mystery bookstore and one outstanding individual supporting the mystery book genre. We were also thrilled to learn that our friend, delightful veteran author Martha Grimes, has been chosen as the 2012 Grand Master, for her significant achievement over many years.

Following are excerpts from the MWA press release:

"This award recognizes outstanding achievement in the mystery field outside the realm of creative writing [this year going to] "M" is for Mystery in San Mateo, CA and Molly Weston of Meritorious Mysteries, a blog.

" "M" is for Mystery opened its doors in 1996, and is one of the strongest and most visible mystery bookstores in North America. Owner and founder Ed Kaufman, along with his wife Jeannie, are devoted champions of the mystery genre. With the closing of the San Francisco Mystery Bookstore, "M" is for Mystery remains the only mystery bookstore between Los Angeles and Portland.

"The Kaufmans said, 'We are thrilled to be honored with the MWA Raven Award. It is a distinction that puts us in the company of many wonderful mystery bookstores nationwide that have previously received this award. We wish to acknowledge the support of all our loyal customers over these fifteen years, and the many great authors who have come to the store to speak, sign, and lend their creative spark.' "

The complete press release can be viewed at: Mystery Writers of America Announces Martha Grimes as 2012 Grand Master Plus Ellery Queen and Raven Awards

AND: A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who called, emailed or left messages on our FB page yesterday and today to offer congrats! Obviously there are too many to individually acknowledge, so please accept this mass thanks!

Anthony Horowitz: The House of Silk
Last Thursday night approximately 200 people attended a marvelous event for Anthony Horowitz ('The House of Silk'), co-hosted by Belmont Library in their usual superb fashion. If you were there, you know Mr. Horowitz  gave an excellent and hilarious talk, and we think you will agree with the author's comments given to us at the end of the evening, which we summarize here for you:

He said that this was the type of event he expected when he toured America, adding "why couldn't they all have been like this one?" with 'Foyle's War' music playing as he entered, a young fan who flew 3,000 miles to meet him, all ages in the audience, with excellent questions, and brisk book sales. We also noted that everyone who walked away from getting their book signed was smiling and were still talking about what a great experience it was -- and how inspiring -- as they left the building. (We still have a few signed copies left, going fast! $27.99)

Thurs., December 8th at 7:00 PM: MARTIN LIMON

Mr. Kill  (Soho Crime, $24.00).
"Set in South Korea in 1974, Limón's excellent seventh mystery featuring U.S. Army investigators George Sueño and Ernie Bascom (after 2009's G.I. Bones) richly illustrates how both loathsome and lucrative the American presence is to the Koreans. When Sueño and Bascom look into the rape of a young Korean mother in a bathroom aboard a crowded train traveling from Pusan to Seoul, witnesses claim the rapist was a U.S. serviceman, which the Army tries to deny. . . . A vivid view of Asia, from the Demilitarized Zone to the Yellow Sea, and an insightful look at the era lift this fine entry," said PW.

SUE GRAFTON  - V is for Vengeance
(Putnam, $27.95).
"Kinsey Millhone doesn't look the other way when she sees trouble, so when she spots a woman shoplifting, she immediately informs store authorities. This sets off a chain of events, as the woman is soon found dead of an apparent suicide. Her fiancé doesn't believe she killed herself, and Kinsey's quest to find the truth puts her on the trail of a major shoplifting ring. Grafton's latest alphabetical mystery brings Kinsey into contact with a number of shady characters, from gangsters and gamblers to unhappy and unfaithful spouses. . . . Grafton's pioneering sleuth is as clever and witty as ever," said Library Journal.

KARL MARLANTES  - What It Is Like To Go To War
(Atlantic, $25.00).
The San Francisco Chronicle said: "[This] ought to be mandatory reading by potential infantry recruits and by residents of any nation that sends its kids -- Marlantes's word -- into combat." The Washington Post called it "a well-crafted and forcefully argued work that contains fresh and important insights into what it's like to be in a war and what it does to the human psyche." And the New Yorker said: "Marlantes brings candor and wrenching self-analysis to bear on his combat experiences in Vietnam, in a memoir-based meditation whose intentions are three-fold: to help soldiers-to-be understand what they're in for; to help veterans come to terms with what they've seen and done; and to help policymakers know what they're asking of the men they send into combat."

LEE CHILD - The Affair

(Bantam, $39.00) Sale Price is $23.40. Not Signed.  Booklist starred: "Jack Reacher fans know the basics about their hero career army MP suddenly transformed into the ultimate lone wolf but they don't know the backstory. Finally, Child fills us in on what drove Reacher, a good soldier above all, out of the army. . . . Child's mastery of high-octane plotting remains remarkable, as does his ability to inject what, in other hands, might have been cartoon characters with all the sinews that power human beings."

HENNING MANKELL - The Troubled Man

(Harvill Secker, Price, $36.00) Sale Price is $21.60. Not Signed. The first new Wallander novel for a decade, the culmination of the bestselling series from the godfather of Swedish crime. Every morning Håkan von Enke takes a walk in the forest near his apartment in Stockholm. However, one winter's day he fails to come home. It seems that the retired naval officer has vanished without trace. Detective Kurt Wallander is not officially involved in the investigation but he has personal reasons for his interest in the case as Håkan's son is engaged to his daughter Linda. His search leads him down dark and unexpected avenues involving espionage, betrayal and new information about events during the Cold War that threatens to cause a political scandal on a scale unprecedented in Swedish history.

JO NESBO - Headhunters

(Harvill Secker, $24.00, paperback). Sale Price is $14.40. Not Signed.  A stand-alone thriller from the top-selling Norwegian star. "With echoes of The Thomas Crown Affair, spectacular storytelling and a beautifully judged super-twist, it confirms Nesbo's place at the pinnacle of thriller writers and, inevitably, a film version will be with us next year. It's that good," said the Daily Mail.

STEF PENNEY - The Invisible Ones

(Quercus, $49.00). Sale Price is $29.40. Signed. The author of The Tenderness of Wolves returns with her second novel, this one set in 1980's England involving a disappeared gypsy girl who had been married to the charismatic son of a travelling gypsy family. "This is an accomplished, polished tale . . . Penney takes her time building up suspense and drawing us into the heads of her characters, but never lets up on intriguing and mysterious situations. She is a true storyteller . . . she knows how to tell a story, how to reach her readers and hold them from start to finish. Indeed, she may be one of the best storytellers we have at the moment," said The Scotsman.

Specially Priced UK Books:

 ANDREW GREIG - Romanno Bridge
(Quercus, $10.00). Sale Price is $6.00. Signed. A motorcyclist with a stolen ring walks into Rothiemurchus Forest until he finds a quiet place to die. A woman with an eventful past has signed the Official Secrets Act and gone to Dumfries to forget a man and keep out of trouble. In comfortable Crieff, a retired historian publishes an obscure article on the survival of the Stone of Destiny, then has his throat cut. A man with a long blade in a tan holster under his suit, a fondness for bird-watching, and memories of his short-lived Punk band Anger Management, has taken a commission to retrieve an object so valuable and mythic it might not exist. A wintry thriller, an entertainment, a quest and an exploration of contemporary themes of fakes, frauds, copies, and a struggle to find the Real Thing, wherever and whatever it might be.

STUART NEVILLE - Collusion
(Harvill Secker, UK , 2009,  $24.00) Sale Price is $14.40. Signed. TPBO.  Former paramilitary killer Gerry Fegan wanders New York City, hiding from a past he escaped at terrible cost. But he made a fatal mistake: he spared the life of Bull O'Kane, a ruthless man who will stop at nothing to get his revenge. Too many witnesses survived a bloody battle at his border farm, and now he wants them silenced, whether man, woman or child. O'Kane calls the Traveller, an assassin without pity or remorse, a killer of the purest kind.  Back in Belfast, Detective Inspector Jack Lennon, father of one the witnesses, is caught up in a web of official secrets and lies as he tries to uncover the whereabouts of his daughter. The closer he gets to the truth about the events on O'Kane's border farm, the more his superiors instruct him to back off.

JOHN LAWTON - Old Flames
(UK: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1996, $22.00, true first edition! Not Signed). Sale Price is $13.20.  A nice deal on this author's third book. "Lawton has created an effective genre-bending novel that is at once a cerebral thriller and an uproarious, deliciously English spoof," said  PW.  And Booklist said: "April 1956. Nikita Krushchev is in London on a diplomatic errand. Chief Inspector Frederick Troy of Scotland Yard is assigned as a bodyguard to the Russian leader. But he has a secret mission, too: Troy, fluent in Russian, is to spy on Khrushchev (who doesn't know the British cop speaks his language) by eavesdropping.... Lawton,... vividly re-creates cold war Britain.... jam-packed with detail and with many fully realized characters. The intriguing mystery plus the wonderfully re-created period setting equals first-class storytelling."

FREDERIC BROWN

candleHere Comes A Candle (Centipede Press, 2006, $49.00). Sale Price is $29.40. With an illuminating new introduction by Bill Pronzini that provides a lot of biographical details, 2 bonus short stories (the savage 'The Joke' and 'It's Only Everything') and a rare essay by Brown. Bound in three-piece cloth with a full color dustjacket. First published in 1950, this is Fredric Brown at his most unconventional and audacious -- a novel that, in many respects, was far ahead of its time. Psychologically complex, unconventionally told in an array of stylistic variations, it is a tour de force with a savagely ironic ending not to be soon forgotten and offers a grim look at the underside of a sanitized post-World War II America.  Signed by Pronzini and numbered and limited to 300 copies.

MadballMadball  (Centipede Press, 2008, $75.00). Sale Price is $45.00. Dick Adler wrote the introduction, and signed. This edition is signed, numbered, and limited to 300 copies. This is its first ever hardcover appearance, and includes two bonus short stories: "Come and Go Mad," considered by many to be Brown's finest short work, and the long out of print "Greatest Poem Ever Written."

RAMSEY CAMPBELL - The Face That Must Die
face must die(Millipede Press, 2006, $17.95). Sale Price is $10.77. First thus edition, First printing, hardcover. Signed by Campbell, Brite and Potter on numbered presentation page at back of book. Very Fine /Very Fine dust jacket. Number 85 of limited edition of 300. Cloth bound. Ramsey Campbell's daring look into the mind of a psychotic killer was published in truncated form in 1979; an expanded edition was later published in 1982. This edition has corrected text by Campbell, compelling photographs of J.K. Potter, a new introduction by Poppy Z. Brite, a bonus short story ('I am it and it is I'), and a new afterword by Campbell. As new.

PAULO COELHO - Aleph
(Knopf, $60.00). Sale price is $36.00
Limited Edition signed by Paulo Coelho!  The celebrated #1 international best seller will be available in a beautifully designed boxed hardcover edition, signed by the author. Limited to 1500 copies.  Pre-order your copy today!

DAVID GOODIS

Nightfall (Centipede Press, 2007, $32.00). Sale Price is $19.20. Introduction by Bill Pronzini, numbered and signed by him; and includes a long bonus short story, "The Blue Sweetheart." Bound in cloth and limited to 300 numbered copies. Said to be David Goodis's most accomplished novel, it is a tour de force of paranoia and criminal greed, by the writer who turned the crime novel into bitter poetry.

Street of No Return (Centipede Press, 2007, $32.00). Sale Price is $19.20. With a new introduction by Robert Polito, numbered and signed by him. Includes a bonus short story, "Black Pudding." Limited to 300 cloth copies. Goodis works the magic that made him one of the most distinctive voices in hard-boiled fiction, creating a claustrophobic universe in which wounded men and women collide with cataclysmic force.

RICHARD NEELY - The Plastic Nightmare
richard neely(Centipede Press, 2008, $39.00). Sale Price is $23.40. With a new introduction by Ed Gorman and a long, previously out of print interview with Neely, this is a new, definitive edition (the novel was originally published in 1969). Interior artwork by Don Brautigam; also includes a reproduction of the first edition Ace paperback cover art. Now it is given a beautiful hardcover treatment, the first time ever in the United States, with a handsome cloth reminiscent of bandages. It explores a physchological depth and depravity seldom found in Noir fiction.  Called the de Sade of the genre by Ed Gorman, Neely's haunting foray into the politics of memories, madness and identity, is surely one of the last great noir thrillers, but also informed by a fresh, 1960s perspective.

MAXINE O'CALLAGHAN - Bibliography 1974-1995
(ASAP, 1994, $22.00). Sale Price is $13.20. Collectors Edition, Limited to 50 copies, Numbered First Edition in soft cover. Signed by the author of the appreciation, Marcia Muller, the author of the afterword, Wendy Hornsby, and the illustrator, Phil Parks, on presentation page. Very Fine. Short stories "A Change of Clients" and "Deal with the Devil." No dustjacket as issued. Acrylic slipcase. As new.

CHARLES WILLIAMS - The Hot Spot
(Centipede Press, 2009, $45.00). Sale Price is $27.00. Also known as 'Hell Hath No Fury.' With an insightful introduction by Bill Pronzini and artwork by Joe Servello, this marks the first-ever U.S. hardcover edition of this classic. Memorably filmed in the 1990s by Dennis Hopper. Quarterbound in Japanese cloth with a printed image on the front panel. Over 6 ◊ 9 inches, three-piece Japanese cloth construction, ribbon marker, patterned endsheets and a beautiful design.  Edition of 250, signed and numbered by Pronzini and Servello.
