Greetings!

On Sunday afternoon, the Belmont Library hosts DAVID VANN with his new true crime book. For 12 years, no agent would send out the author's first book, Legend of a Suicide (2008), so David went to sea and became a captain and a boat builder. That book has now won 10 international prizes for the Alaskan-born author. Kirkus Reviews called the new book "A carefully crafted account of a descent into fatal madness."

Fri/Sat., Nov. 11th/12th DROP BY: GREGORY MAGUIRE

Out of Oz (Wm. Morrow, $26.99).
Library Journal starred: "Engrossing, complex . . . continues to flip the world of Oz on its head while answering new and old questions about Oz and its denizens. Highly recommended." 'Booklist' called it "A worthy conclusion to an imaginative and emotionally searing cultural phenomenon. . . . nobody does fractured fairy tales better than Maguire." And PW concluded: "The language and imagery are rich, and the sense of love, loss, and regret palpable. For fans, this will be a revealing and satisfying end to the layered tale begun in Wicked. "

Sun., Nov. 13th at 3:00 PM at Belmont Library - DAVID VANN
The Belmont Library is located at 1110 Alameda de las Pulgas Belmont, CA 94002.

Last Day on Earth (Univ. of Georgia Press, $24.95).
Kirkus called it "A carefully crafted account of a descent into fatal madness." On Valentine's Day 2008, Steve Kazmierczak killed five and wounded eighteen at Northern Illinois University, then killed himself. But he was an A student, a Deans' Award winner. How could this happen? CNN could not get the story. The Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and all others came up empty because Steve's friends and professors knew very little. He had reinvented himself in his final five years. But David Vann, investigating for Esquire, went back to Steve's high school and junior high friends, found a life perfectly shaped for mass murder, and gained full access to the entire 1,500 pages of the police files.

Tues., Nov. 15th at 7:00PM at the San Mateo Library: JAN HARWOOD
The San Mateo Library is located just one block west of our store at 55 W 3rd Ave, San Mateo.

Dangerous Women:  A Raging Granny Mystery (Trade paperback original, $14.95).
The author is a founding member of the Santa Cruz WILPF Raging Grannies who have made national news by singing witty political parodies and putting their voices to good use. Now the Raging Grannies have one more role to take on -- as star characters in Ms. Harwood's new mystery. After getting the attention of a right-wing pundit on local TV, the Raging Grannies are shocked to hear that he dies the very next day. Was it a suicide as the police suggest or is there more at play? The WILPF group of Raging Grannies set off to find the real murderer, and come very close to lethal danger themselves.

Thurs., Nov. 17th at 7:00 PM at Belmont Library - ANTHONY HOROWITZ
The Belmont Library is located at 1110 Alameda de las Pulgas Belmont, CA 94002.

The House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes Novel
(Mulholland Books, $27.99).
Horowitz is the creator of several popular British television series, including Poirot and Foyle's War, as well as the bestselling Alex Rider series of books for children, among myriad other writing credits. "For the first time ever, the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has authorized a new Holmes story. In fact, the estate approached Horowitz. . . . A Holmes expert, Horowitz says he's steeped in 19th-century literature and will aim for authenticity in plot, language, and character. . . . No word on the content yet -- the publisher will reveal clues with tantalizing slowness, as in a good (ahem) mystery," said Library Journal.

Tues., Nov. 29th at 7:00 PM: "M" is for Mystery Bookclub
This month's book is City of Secrets by Kelli Stanley.
Join us every last Tuesday of the month for lively d

ALAN HOLLINGHURST - The Stranger's Child
(Knopf, $27.95).
"Lives tangle and untangle in a literate, literary mystery at the heart of World War I by Man Booker Prize winner Hollinghurst . . . How do we know the truth about anyone's life? [This] carefully written, philosophically charged novel invites us to consider that question," said Kirkus. And Library Journal praised: With the prewar ambiance of 'Atonement,' the manor-house mystique of Gosford Park, and the palpable sexual tension of Hollinghurst's own The Line of Beauty, this generously paced, thoroughly satisfying novel will gladden the hearts of Anglophile readers." Concluded the Washington Post: [This] could hardly be better. . . . Part social history, part social comedy and wholly absorbing, The Stranger's Child does everything a novel should do and makes it look easy."

LENE KAABERBOL and AGNETE FRIIS  - The Boy in the Suitcase
(Soho Crime, $24.00).
SIGNED by both on a tipped-in half title page. "Of all the recent Scandinavian thrillers that have been rushed into translation for fans of Stieg Larsson, here's one whose pair of strong heroines taking on a monstrous conspiracy of men behaving badly is actually reminiscent of the Millennium Trilogy.... A debut that's a model of finely tuned suspense," said 'Kirkus.' And 'PW' concluded: "Without flashy plot devices, Kaaberbøl and Friis let Nina's particular blend of stoicism and vulnerability guide the story." Lene Kaaberbøl has sold more than two million books worldwide as a fantasy writer. Her collaborator, Agnete Friis, is a children's writer. Their bestselling Nina Borg series has been translated into ten languages.

JOE ABERCROMBIE - The Heroes

(Gollancz, $64.00) Sale Price is $38.40. Signed. "Abercrombie's take on fantasy has always been dark, almost nihilistic, yet shot through with black humour. The deliberate irony of the title of this book is that he does not write about heroes, he writes about ordinary people thrust in to extraordinary situations who seldom, if ever, acquit themselves heroically. Highly recommended both for fantasy readers and lovers of Cornwell and Iggulden," said Book Geek. And SF Reviews said: "Abercrombie has quickly risen to the top ranks of heroic fantasy. This novel, a stand-alone epic that doesn't require you to have read his others, makes it abundantly clear why. Even among writers known for doing fine characterization, Abercrombie's approach is strikingly effective and not quite like anyone else's."

LEE CHILD - The Affair

(Bantam, $39.00) Sale Price is $23.40. Not Signed.  Booklist starred: "Jack Reacher fans know the basics about their hero career army MP suddenly transformed into the ultimate lone wolf but they don't know the backstory. Finally, Child fills us in on what drove Reacher, a good soldier above all, out of the army. . . . Child's mastery of high-octane plotting remains remarkable, as does his ability to inject what, in other hands, might have been cartoon characters with all the sinews that power human beings."

ELLY GRIFFITHS - The House at Sea's End

(Quercus, $44.00) Sale Price is $26.40. Signed. When a team from the University of North Norfolk, investigating coastal erosion, finds six bodies buried at the foot of the cliff, Ruth Galloway is immediately put on the case. Forensic tests prove that the bodies are from Southern Europe, killed sixty years ago. Police Investigations unearth records of Project Lucifer, a wartime plan to stop a German invasion. A further discovery reveals that members of the Broughton Sea's End Home Guard took a 'blood oath' to conceal some deadly wartime secret. The more information they uncover, the more elusive any explanation becomes. When a visiting German reporter is killed, Ruth and Nelson realise that someone is still alive who will kill to keep the secret of Broughton Sea's End's war years.

SOPHIE HANNAH - Lasting Damage

(Hodder & Stoughton, $34.00) Sale Price is $20.40. Signed. A click on the 'virtual tour' button of a property website reveals a nightmare scene: in the living room, in the middle of the carpet, there's a woman lying face down in a huge pool of blood. Acclaim for Hannah: 'If you're new to the Sophie Hannah phenomenon, let us explain: she's the author of five previous psychological crime thrillers, each of which begins with a cunning premise, which grips like a vice for the rest of the novel, with myriad twists you never see coming; another superb mystery in which extraordinary things happen to ordinary people." (Heat magazine)  "Hannah takes domestic scenarios, adds disquieting touches and turns up the suspense until you're checking under the bed for murders." (The Independent)

HENNING MANKELL - The Troubled Man

(Harvill Secker, Price, $36.00) Sale Price is $21.60. Not Signed. The first new Wallander novel for a decade, the culmination of the bestselling series from the godfather of Swedish crime. Every morning Håkan von Enke takes a walk in the forest near his apartment in Stockholm. However, one winter's day he fails to come home. It seems that the retired naval officer has vanished without trace. Detective Kurt Wallander is not officially involved in the investigation but he has personal reasons for his interest in the case as Håkan's son is engaged to his daughter Linda. His search leads him down dark and unexpected avenues involving espionage, betrayal and new information about events during the Cold War that threatens to cause a political scandal on a scale unprecedented in Swedish history.

JO NESBO - Headhunters

(Harvill Secker, $24.00, paperback). Sale Price is $14.40. Not Signed.  A stand-alone thriller from the top-selling Norwegian star. "With echoes of The Thomas Crown Affair, spectacular storytelling and a beautifully judged super-twist, it confirms Nesbo's place at the pinnacle of thriller writers and, inevitably, a film version will be with us next year. It's that good," said the Daily Mail.

STEF PENNEY - The Invisible Ones

(Quercus, $49.00). Sale Price is $29.40. Signed. The author of The Tenderness of Wolves returns with her second novel, this one set in 1980's England involving a disappeared gypsy girl who had been married to the charismatic son of a travelling gypsy family. "This is an accomplished, polished tale . . . Penney takes her time building up suspense and drawing us into the heads of her characters, but never lets up on intriguing and mysterious situations. She is a true storyteller . . . she knows how to tell a story, how to reach her readers and hold them from start to finish. Indeed, she may be one of the best storytellers we have at the moment," said The Scotsman.

WILLIAM RYAN - The Bloody Meadow

(Mantle, $39.00). Sale Price is $23.40. Signed. The author's second book after The Holy Thief, a 2010 bestseller. Moscow, 1936 and Stalin's Great Terror is beginning. In a deconsecrated Church, a young woman is found dead, her mutilated body displayed on the altar for all to see. Captain Alexei Dimitrevich Korolev of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Moscow Militia, is asked to investigate. But when he discovers that the victim is an American citizen, the NKVD -- the most feared organisation in Russia -- becomes involved.

Specially Priced UK Books:

 ANDREW GREIG - Romanno Bridge
(Quercus, $10.00). Sale Price is $6.00. Signed. A motorcyclist with a stolen ring walks into Rothiemurchus Forest until he finds a quiet place to die. A woman with an eventful past has signed the Official Secrets Act and gone to Dumfries to forget a man and keep out of trouble. In comfortable Crieff, a retired historian publishes an obscure article on the survival of the Stone of Destiny, then has his throat cut. A man with a long blade in a tan holster under his suit, a fondness for bird-watching, and memories of his short-lived Punk band Anger Management, has taken a commission to retrieve an object so valuable and mythic it might not exist. A wintry thriller, an entertainment, a quest and an exploration of contemporary themes of fakes, frauds, copies, and a struggle to find the Real Thing, wherever and whatever it might be.

STUART NEVILLE - Collusion
(Harvill Secker, UK , 2009,  $24.00) Sale Price is $14.40. Signed. TPBO.  Former paramilitary killer Gerry Fegan wanders New York City, hiding from a past he escaped at terrible cost. But he made a fatal mistake: he spared the life of Bull O'Kane, a ruthless man who will stop at nothing to get his revenge. Too many witnesses survived a bloody battle at his border farm, and now he wants them silenced, whether man, woman or child. O'Kane calls the Traveller, an assassin without pity or remorse, a killer of the purest kind.  Back in Belfast, Detective Inspector Jack Lennon, father of one the witnesses, is caught up in a web of official secrets and lies as he tries to uncover the whereabouts of his daughter. The closer he gets to the truth about the events on O'Kane's border farm, the more his superiors instruct him to back off.

JOHN LAWTON - Old Flames
(UK: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1996, $22.00, true first edition! Not Signed). Sale Price is $13.20.  A nice deal on this author's third book. "Lawton has created an effective genre-bending novel that is at once a cerebral thriller and an uproarious, deliciously English spoof," said  PW.  And Booklist said: "April 1956. Nikita Krushchev is in London on a diplomatic errand. Chief Inspector Frederick Troy of Scotland Yard is assigned as a bodyguard to the Russian leader. But he has a secret mission, too: Troy, fluent in Russian, is to spy on Khrushchev (who doesn't know the British cop speaks his language) by eavesdropping.... Lawton,... vividly re-creates cold war Britain.... jam-packed with detail and with many fully realized characters. The intriguing mystery plus the wonderfully re-created period setting equals first-class storytelling."

FREDERIC BROWN

candleHere Comes A Candle (Centipede Press, 2006, $49.00). Sale Price is $29.40. With an illuminating new introduction by Bill Pronzini that provides a lot of biographical details, 2 bonus short stories (the savage 'The Joke' and 'It's Only Everything') and a rare essay by Brown. Bound in three-piece cloth with a full color dustjacket. First published in 1950, this is Fredric Brown at his most unconventional and audacious -- a novel that, in many respects, was far ahead of its time. Psychologically complex, unconventionally told in an array of stylistic variations, it is a tour de force with a savagely ironic ending not to be soon forgotten and offers a grim look at the underside of a sanitized post-World War II America.  Signed by Pronzini and numbered and limited to 300 copies.

MadballMadball  (Centipede Press, 2008, $75.00). Sale Price is $45.00. Dick Adler wrote the introduction, and signed. This edition is signed, numbered, and limited to 300 copies. This is its first ever hardcover appearance, and includes two bonus short stories: "Come and Go Mad," considered by many to be Brown's finest short work, and the long out of print "Greatest Poem Ever Written."

As new.

DAVID GOODIS

Nightfall (Centipede Press, 2007, $32.00). Sale Price is $19.20. Introduction by Bill Pronzini, numbered and signed by him; and includes a long bonus short story, "The Blue Sweetheart." Bound in cloth and limited to 300 numbered copies. Said to be David Goodis's most accomplished novel, it is a tour de force of paranoia and criminal greed, by the writer who turned the crime novel into bitter poetry.

Street of No Return (Centipede Press, 2007, $32.00). Sale Price is $19.20. With a new introduction by Robert Polito, numbered and signed by him. Includes a bonus short story, "Black Pudding." Limited to 300 cloth copies. Goodis works the magic that made him one of the most distinctive voices in hard-boiled fiction, creating a claustrophobic universe in which wounded men and women collide with cataclysmic force.

RICHARD NEELY - The Plastic Nightmare
richard neely(Centipede Press, 2008, $39.00). Sale Price is $23.40. With a new introduction by Ed Gorman and a long, previously out of print interview with Neely, this is a new, definitive edition (the novel was originally published in 1969). Interior artwork by Don Brautigam; also includes a reproduction of the first edition Ace paperback cover art. Now it is given a beautiful hardcover treatment, the first time ever in the United States, with a handsome cloth reminiscent of bandages. It explores a physchological depth and depravity seldom found in Noir fiction.  Called the de Sade of the genre by Ed Gorman, Neely's haunting foray into the politics of memories, madness and identity, is surely one of the last great noir thrillers, but also informed by a fresh, 1960s perspective.
