Dear Friends,

This year is about to come to a close, and I know we have a lot to be thankful for here at GWSCPA. We are so grateful that many of our members are active in our Society, taking on leadership roles in committees, helping our staff to plan and execute outstanding events and supporting our efforts to advance the accounting profession.

It is that advancement of the profession that is on my mind today. Since 1963, the GWSCPA Scholarship Fund has been making awards to local university students pursuing a career in accounting. To date, we have given over $240,000 in scholarships out to deserving students, many of whom have gone on to become our members as they also became your colleagues. As we have been working over the last couple of years to grow all our programs here, so too have we been working to expand our scholarship program. Our goal for 2011 is to make five awards ranging from $2,000-5,000 each and to add to build our funds for future years.

As you make end of the year giving plans, I am asking you to consider a contribution to the GWSCPA Scholarship Fund this year.  All gifts are appreciated and we have set up an online donation portal to make it as easy as possible for you to support us this year.

Your gift helps support future CPAs and the future of this profession which we all care about.

Thank you,

Kari Bedell

AICPA releases White Paper on Frank-Dodd Act

In the wake of the economic crisis in 2008, policymakers and politicians set to work on a far-reaching overhaul of the financial markets and industry regulation. The result two years later is the landmark Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. This far-reaching legislation will have a meaningful impact on CPAs and their clients or employers in many areas. The outcomes may impact future business activities through new regulation, increased cost or changes in borrowing rates or capital requirements. (AICPA)

Regulatory and Legislative News

Broker-dealer audits, the auditor's reporting model and foreign inspections will be among the PCAOB's top priorities
in 2011

The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act gave the board authority over auditors of all SEC-registered securities broker-dealers. Those auditors had previously been required to register with the PCAOB, but were not otherwise subject to its authority.  (Journal of Accountancy)

SEC to allow Adjustment time for IFRS

The SEC still plans to vote next year on whether to require the use of IFRS, it is "not committed to a June 2011 decision date ... despite a common [misconception by the accounting] profession," SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro said. While affirming the commission's desire to keep moving toward IFRS adoption, the new timeline offered issuers some breathing room from the 2014 deadline originally spelled out in the proposed road map the SEC unveiled in 2008. Starting in 2011, Many Paid Preparers Must e-File Federal Returns for Individuals, Estates and Trusts

Exposure Draft - Proposed Changes to UAA and UAA Model Rules

The AICPA/NABA UAA Committee has worked over the past year to consider guidelines as to what are and what are not misleading CPA firm names.  The proposed changes to the UAA and Model Rules in this exposure draft are the result of these efforts. The proposed changes add a definition of "Network" and "Network Firm" to the Uniform Accountancy Act.  (Draft )
