| President's Message |
I cannot believe that 2011 is here already! This will be a big year for SDIW as we will be holding the Region VIII Annual Convention here. There is still a lot of planning and fundraising left to do so if you can lend a hand or have any good ideas.....let us know!
Our December meeting was a lot of fun. It was a great time for all of us to catch up and just enjoy each others company. We had delicious appetizers and Imperial Credit Corporation was our drink sponsor, thanks Tram Phan for setting that up!
At the meeting we discussed what we have been doing to raise money. Ruth Hinkfuss, from Barney & Barney, talked about working events at the stadium. So far SDIW members have worked at two Charger games. Everyone seems to have enjoyed doing it and it appears to have brought in a lot of money for our fundraising endeavors. If you are interested in helping out at one of these events, please contact Ruth for more information.
If you haven't heard....we have been working on putting together a calendar featuring San Diego Men in Insurance. Kerstenbeck Photography has donated their time and services to take the photos and the pictures are amazing! The calendar will be an 18 month calendar which will go from July 2011 to December 2012.
My prayer is that we all have a healthy and happy 2011!
In fellowship,
Jennifer Hetzel

Wow! Can you believe it's already 2011?? We have a lot of great things planned for the new year as well as our Membership Drive with Wine Tasting set for March 21st! You don't want to miss this!
We are now 6 months into our year and the membership dues paid through June 30th are now HALF - so anyone who has been putting off joining due to the cost - now is a great time to sign up. Remember the International President, Margaret Wildi has set goals for each Association on membership that she calls "Every member get a member", so any of you that have not asked one of your co-workers to attend a meeting with you, set yourself a goal to do so in 2011. Here's hoping you all have a fabulous Holiday and let's hit the ground running in 2011!! Legislative Report - Pam Legge
| Health Care Reform Rages On
The Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act continues to keep employers and benefit consultants on their toes! On December 22nd, we received information on yet another significant change to the Health Care Reform law. This notice addresses the timing of the application of the Affordable Care Act provisions prohibiting insured group health plans from discriminating in favor of highly compensated individuals. A previous Notice (2010-63) issued on September 20, 2010, requested public comments on guidance needed regarding the Non-Discrimination issue. Comments raised fundamental concerns about plan sponsors abilities to comply with 2716 without clear regulatory guidance. The Treasury Department and the IRS, as well as the Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services, have determined that compliance should not be required (and thus, any sanctions for failure to comply do not apply) until after regulations or other administrative guidance of general applicability has been issued. In order to provide insured group health plan sponsors time to implement any changes required as a result of the regulations or other guidance, the Departments anticipate that the guidance will not apply until plan years beginning a specified period after issuance. Some of the comments already contained within the Notice suggest guidance on the application of 2716 before plan years beginning 2014 (when State Exchanges, employer responsibility and penalty provisions, and related provisions take effect) and after 2014. The Departments recognize that guidance under 2716 must take into consideration the Exchange operations and individual and plan sponsor requirements that go in effect after 2013. So, for now, employers will not be responsible to conduct and submit the results of the Non-Discrimination testing as originally stated for 2011. As we say, continue to stay informed of the law, but don't memorize it!! In Fellowship, Pam Legge |
