Quote of Note

"Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected."

- Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs - 1955 - 2011
Innovator, pioneer, visionary
Very few people are blessed with the brilliance that Steve Jobs had. He was a true technologist, a man who wasn't happy simply to make neat stuff - he wanted to make neat stuff that was art as well. Not only was he the driving force behind Apple's technology, he shaped its public face as well, putting his stamp on brilliant marketing campaigns that make Apple products higlhly coveted by nearly everyone who saw them. For those of us at Telos, Jobs' to make tech that surprises and delights inspired us for many, many years.

We will miss Steve and the creative, insightful designs and products with which he enriched our world. For a taste of his famous quirkiness and passionate pursuit of excellence, check out PCMag's compendium of stories culled from the Macintosh years - then click the video link below.

A couple of years back, Jobs famously said "Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful, that's what matters to me." Mission accomplished.
Congratulations - you're 1,500!
A lot of candles on the cake for Telos Hx POTS hybrids
Music 88 Jamaica logo OK, it's not a birthday; more of a milestone. But it certainly is worth noting that, recently, Telos' newest POTS hybrids, the Hx1 (single-line) and Hx2 (twin-line) recently joined the 1,500 club, just shy of their first birthday. Kingston, Jamaica's Music 99FM was the lucky recipient of the milestone unit (their sister station, Power 106, gets #1,501)

What can make a hybrid so popular? Well, Telos has learned a lot since we put the Telos 10 on the market in 1985. Hx hybrids are packed full of our latest advances, like caller audio dynamics from our brothers at Omnia, highly-advanced new hybrid routines, and DSP code that helps make even cell-phone callers sound like stars. Not to mention a host of standard goodies like a superb new acoustic echo canceller, auto answer and caller-disconnect detection that finally gives the ol' dial-tone blast a boot out the door. And at just $795 USD, an Hx1 that will make your POTS calls sing is a great value.

Introducing the Telos Alliance Tech Blog
A little taste of Telos throughout the month
Vintage micWe're always thinking about new ways broadcasters can benefit from technology. In fact, we've sometimes been accused of over-thinking (but we've chosen not to over-think that criticism), So we've set up a little technical blog under the auspices of our new Telos Alliance homepage, and we'll be updating it every so often with thoughts on the state of broadcast engineering, ideas that you've written us with, and nuggets of cool information that might just help you get more from your broadcast gear. Check it out at TelosAlliance.com/blog/ or add us to your RSS reader for automatic updates.

What's your opinion?
Cell phones are great. But what do you do when they don't work? A recent widespread power outage in Southern California prompted Telos' Clark Novak to write about the essential service that the lowly Public Switched Telephone Network provides, and why AT&T's abandonment petition to the FCC should be denied. His musing has been printed in the most recent issue of Radio World, and also posted online. We invite you to visit the link and add your opinion to the discussion there - and then let the FCC commissioners know where you stand on this issue.
Tech Tip of the Month
Windows Media Player iconPlaying Livewire Streams using Windows Media Player

Did you know that you can use Media Player (or any standards-compliant player, like VLC Player or Quicktime) to play the RTP audio streams generated by your Livewire network? Think of the possibilities around your plant: any computer with a set of speakers instantly becomes a listening station for any audio channel your plant is generating. All you have to do is generate a standard SDP file so your player knows what stream to load and play.

To do this, you'll need 3 things:

  1. Axia DirectShow filters, available from www.AxiaAudio.com/downloads/
  2. An SDP generator, online at www.axiaaudio.com/downloads/files/directshow/sdpgen.html
  3. The tech note, entitled "Playing Livewire Streams in Media Players Using SDP FIles" posted at http://www.axiaaudio.com/manuals/default.htm#Miscellaneous_Guides

Just follow the instructions in the tech note and you'll be streaming Axia channels on your PCs faster than you can say "Session Description Protocol."

Something for your 'pad, man
iPad It's safe to say that tablet computing was basically a non-starter until the iPad came around. Then, when the iPad 2 hit shelves earlier this year, things really began to take off - we recall seeing many, many engineers walking around with iPads at this year's major trade shows. Certainly, it's an outward proclamation of your inner uber-geekdom. Your Editor admits to a not-so-secret case of iPad lust, himself.

Now comes word that 97% of tablet Internet traffic comes from iPad users. And more people are jumping on the bandwagon all the time. So, now that you've got that nifty tablet, what to do with it? For your perusing pleasure, we present some lists of  the Top 200, Top 100, and Top 50 iPad apps (from TechRadar UK, PCMag and The Guardian, respectively). And, don't forget Radio Ink publisher Eric Rhoads' PastBlast app, featuring scenes of radio history culled from his book "Blast From The Past: Radio's First 75 Years".

Until next time, stay well!
