Historic WSM picks Axia consoles
WSM ButtonThe Grand Ole Opry will soon have brand new boards
Everyone knows the call letters WSM, Nashville's legendary AM broadcaster that's been the US' home of country music since 1928. It's the radio home of the Grand Ole Opry, one of the longest-running, most beloved music programs on the air, and was recently declared a national historic site. So when it was time for new consoles and for the Opry broadcasts, you'd best believe the decision was carefully considered. So we're extremely humbled and pleased that WSM selected Axia gear for this important installation.

So why did WSM pick Axia? Well, Element 2.0 IP consoles have become the most popular IP console in the industry, thanks to powerful capabilities like automatic per-fader mix-minus, onboard EQ and voice processing, Show Profiles console "snapshots," and comprehensive talkback. Or the fact that Axia is the established IP leader -- did you know that there are over 2,000 studios worldwide with Axia consoles and routing networks? If IP in in your future, we invite you to read more at www.AxiaAudio.com.

It's all about getting the levels right
"A great audio processing system centers on a key concept: getting the levels 'right', all the time," says Omnia chief Frank Foti. And he should know - it's been his obsession for quite a long time. That's the topic up for discussion on June 14th as Frank speaks at the New York AES Section and SBE Chapter 15 meetingin the Radio City Room at the Microsoft Conference Center. Frank says his discussion will center on "new developments which generate level control that gets it right all of the time." Should be a blast! There's still time to register to attend: just visit http://june2011nyaessbe.eventbrite.com/ to sign up.

Telos VX: the talkshow system gets an upgrade
Broadcasting live from a super-secret location near you...
Telos VX Broadcast VoIP System The engineers in our development labs are chomping at the bit to begin full-scale shipment of the award-winning new Telox VX broadcast VoIP Talkshow system - they're hammering out code as fast as they can hammer down Mountain Dew** and Fritos.

However, there are quite a few beta testing sites out there where VX itself is getting hammered - field-tested with unrelenting rigor. One of these sites - a rather large news organization whose name the lawyers forbid us to mention - wrote us this morning after putting VX on a live broadcast. It seems that the network's audio manager, when asked about the quality of VX calls on-air, mused for a moment before responding: "It sounds like a phone call. Only better."

Needless to say, our engineers are pretty pleased with this. After all, VX represents over 25 years of experience tuning, testing and tweaking DSP algorithms to obtain the clearest, cleanest caller audio possible - even from notoriously "dirty" sources like cell-phone callers. It works with POTS, ISDN and even VoIP services and supports up to 48 lines and 16 studio connections, but it's affordable enough to make fiscal sense even if you've only a few studios to outfit.

Read all about VX at www.Telos-Systems.com/VX/ - and while you're at it, check out The Future's Calling: Voice Over IP in the Real World (and your studios) by Telos' own Joe Talbot, which appeared in the May issue of Radio magazine. You can download the PDF here if you missed it.

**Diverging path: we're of the opinion that Diet Mountain Dew may just be the most useful liquid since WD-40. Maybe moreso; you can't drink WD-40. Can you?

Tech Tip of the Month
Making Adobe Audition 3.0 play nice with the Axia IP-Audio Driver
Trevor Stuart, engineer for Astral Radio's Virgin 104.9, Team 1260 and 100.3 The Bear in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, writes: "We recently upgraded from Adobe Audition 1.5 to Audition 3.0. Ever since we are randomly getting a 'clicking sound' when recording using the Axia IP-Audio Driver for Windows. Nothing else gets this, but nothing else on the systems is using ASIO. We are using Driver version 2.5.2.8. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated."

Milos Nemcik, Axia Support maven, replies: "Please update to the current IP-Audio Driver release version, v2.6.1.5. You can find it at www.AxiaAudio.com/downloads/. This new Driver version resolves an issue where, if the source was changed, it could cause a buffer wrap-around which introduced audio clicks. The new version mentioned has this fix, as well as other updates."

Stations, playlists and charts, oh my!
Many of us in the business grew up during the golden age of Top 40 radio, and still recall fondly the surveys, playlists and other ephemera that surround the era. Tim Warden, an IT consultant based in Tucson, has a thing for those old AM surveys as well - and has put a site up to collect and share them. The Airheads Radio Survey Archive is a huge (although by no means complete - how could it be?) collection of both printed and transcribed playlists from stations around the nation, searchable by calls. The site boasts over 18,000 surveys scanned so far! You can even search songs and labels for chart information. If you're a Top 40 junkie, this site is sure to eat up quite a few of your late-night hours.
"And the hits... just keep on comin'!"

Until next time, stay well!
