Bishop's Reflection
tom 2010 assem

T
hought for the Week

Our life as Christians, is not measured by one act, a bunch of poor choices or many sinful deeds. Neither do our noble activities earn us any merit toward salvation. Luther reminded us that our choices will always involve some sin. So let's accept that life is a journey with twists and turns, selfless moments and selfish moments. One sin, or even 1,000 sins do not fully define a person, even while we must live with consequences.
        Ultimately, God's grace in Christ Jesus defines us and enables us to step out in faith, live grace boldly, and bless the world with love.

John Nunes, president of Lutheran World Relief, will be the keynote presenter at this year's Synod Assembly (April 29-May 1) and Exploring Our Mission event (April 30) at Cragun's Conference Center, near Brainerd. In keeping with the Assembly theme: "The Word Working in the World," special emphasis will be on how what we do furthers the work of the Word in the world. To encourage participation from everyone in the synod, all congregations are asked to collect items for LWR Health Kits. The kits will be assembled at a Mission Outpost at the Assembly. We are not worried about the right ration of items to complete "X" number of kits, we will let the Spirit move and determine the outcome.

         Use this copy-ready insert in your Sunday bulletin and/or newsletter to publicize this in your congregation. Click here for a list of items needed.

Bullying the Pastor

If hindsight is 20-20, Pastor Mary's husband, Paul, has pretty good vision. When the chair of the call committee phoned his wife to tell her the congregation was calling her - but the vote "wasn't unanimous" - he got the first clue of what was to come.

A Relationship to Die For
Presented by Pastor Terry Fretheim
, Professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary
Saturday, February 26;
10 am - 2 pm; Cost of $10 includes lunch
Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids.
          "Relationship" is a word that we often use when speaking of God. Indeed, the Bible is filled with images of God that are highly relational. In such a relationship, how might we think about God's power, God's will, our prayers and the shape of the future? What does it mean for God to enter into a relationship with us that is "real"? How are we to interpret these texts? We will explore several Biblical texts that draw out what genuine relationship with God entails.

ELCA Region 3 Discernment Retreat

August 5-7 at NeSoDak Bible Camp near Waubay, SD

          Do you sense God calling you to public ministry in the church? Has someone encouraged you to attend seminary or told you, "You have the gifts to be a pastor?" If this sounds familiar, you are invited to attend. This event is open to individuals from throughout MN, ND and SD who are in the process of discerning what it means to be called to public ministry in the ELCA, and is sponsored by each synod's candidacy committee. You'll join other individuals from our region who are also in the process of discerning God's call to ministry. Together, we'll learn more about the various forms of rostered ministry in the ELCA, the candidacy process and seminary, and gather together for worship, Bible study, fellowship and conversation. The cost for the event, which includes meals and 2 nights lodging, will be around $88 per person.
