Winter 2011

From the Director

Greetings!

2011 is in full gear, and so are we. School swung back into action rather quietly in January. Do you remember this time last year? We had our noses to the grindstone, working feverishly, preparing for our WASC visitation. So glad that we are able to take a deep breath this year. And not to worry there is still a great deal to share.

We have been busy at CLU. Our PTO has just been launched (see article below),  and we are getting ready for the annual Revv'ed Up 4 Kidz event.  The CLU cookbook a wealth of delish recipes that your child has already made. Recreating the recipes with your child is a great way to reinforce skills (i.e. measuring, following directions, reading), while connecting over food.  Contact Christina,  if you are interested in purchasing one.

And one last point. We are re-launching our CLU Student Work section in the newsletter, which showcases the art, poetry, photography, etc.  that our students participate in.

Until the Spring issue...

Sincerely,
 ginny sig

PTOParent Teacher Organization Launched @ CLU

Hello,

The CLU PTO  is now incorporated. We have our own bank account, bylaws and a plan for electing new board members.  To date, we have raised nearly $1500 for the garden and the outdoor Science Center.

Currently, we are collecting bids for the fence and in the process of installing the science center.  It's likely to be up and working this spring!(It's fun to tick off the items on our wish list!)  Thanks to all the participation in fundraisers as well as individual donations, CLU students are gardening and will soon be learning science in a real outdoor science lab!

Speaking of fundraisers, we are gearing up towards one of ourbiggest fundraisers of the year. This event is going to be held at the Wine Styles location just around the corner from CLU between Panera and Gaetano's on Sunday, February 20th from 2:00 - 5:00.  In addition to wine tasting, there will be a fabulous silent auction with items ranging from gym memberships to a massage session.  You won't want to miss this one!  Grab a couple of friends for a fun afternoon out and plan to win several of the items on the auction. This will also be a great opportunity to get to know the other parents and forge friendships that benefit not only parents, but CLU students as well.

Aren't you glad a school like this exists and that we are privileged to be able to have our kids in such a safe and nurturing environment? I know I am!  Let's not lose momentum -there are a lot more items to tick off of our wish list.

Best,

Carissa Dahl

New Technology @ CLUkeyboard keys

Thanks to an anonymous donor, CLU has received 25 new computers. The new Dell computers come with 17 in. LCD screen,  4 Gb of RAM and a whopping 750G hard drive.  They also boast Windows 7 and Office 2010. Students and staff will be trained in the up-coming months on the use of the new operating system and software.

We also have had extra internet lines installed, to make browsing faster. And we are anticipating 75 new chairs. (More information on the particulars forthcoming.)

Next week, we will be sending home our updated Acceptable Use Policy for students. Please make sure you sign and return as soon as possible. (We will send home a reminder to look for it in your student's backpack.)

Next time you are in, make sure you take a look at the shiny, new black computers that are helping us meet our ESLRs.

Healthy Lunchboxes

I am always on the look out for lunch box alternatives to pb&j, our family stand-by. Here are some suggestions. Of course, some children have sensory food issues, so use this as a launching point for what works for you and yours. Source: Laptop Lunches

Music

(written and typed by Scott, edited with Kacey)

My favorite elective is music.  I like it because I get to learn how to play instruments.  I have learned to play the guitar.  I know enough strings to play songs. I am going to learn my first song today. I also play the drums. Aaron showed me how to play the drums but I don't know any songs yet.  I don't have much interest in playing the drums though.  I love going to music.

What Questions Do You Have?
Parents come to CLU with a lot of questions. Hopefully, along our journey together, the questions get answered. However, if you have some questions that you would like answered, here is your opportunity.

We are inviting readers to ask questions. We will attempt to respond to them in subsequent newsletters. Compiled together, we will have a Parent FAQ, which would be a great asset for new parents.

To ask a question, please send it via email to Cara.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
