CubaGo!  Day of Action in Washington, D.C.

On Wednesday, September 30th, WTC Delaware President/CEO Rebecca Faber traveled to Washington, D.C. along with WTC Delaware members Michael Guzzi, Lontano, and Anabel Panayotti and Gwen North, Port to Port International, to promote lifting the travel ban to Cuba for all Americans and eventually opening trade. The House Bill and Senate Bill supporting an end to the travel ban are still looking for co-sponsors and support. Additional issues
affecting businesses currently allowed to export to Cuba (agricultural and medical products) include U.S. banks being prohibited from doing business with Cuban banks, therefore requiring transactions to be routed through foreign banks. There is a further requirement that companies selling medical products to Cuba must report on all end-users, leading to a paperwork nightmare.

Additional information on Cuba, lifting the ban, potential for business in Delaware and the U.S., and text of the House and Senate bills are listed
below.

PORT OF PHILADELPHIA WELCOMES DIRECT CONTAINER SERVICE FROM NORTH EUROPE

Mid-October will mark the beginning of Mediterranean Shipping's (MSC) direct European container service to the Port of Philadelphia. The port is looking forward to the extension of MSC services, which previously consisted of cargo brought in from the western coast of South America.

As the second-largest container ship operator, the new service ships will carry upwards of 4,000 TEUs and are equipped with refrigerated outlets to allow for the transportation of perishable or temperature sensitive cargo.

Using several North European ports such as Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Felixstowe, and Le Havre, the new service will help bolster cargo after a 15% decline that began at the end of June. By the end of the year the port hopes to eliminate the cargo deficit, raising it back to its inital 2 million tons.

IMPACT ANALYSIS
Issues Impacting Global Business

September - October 2009 Issue

The recently held North American Leaders Summit with President Obama, Canadian Prime Minister Harper and Mexican President Calderon failed to enhance regional competitiveness. Few vital issues were discussed, while disputes continue to cause friction (p1-2).

The BRICS-Brazil, Russia, India and China-wish to exert greater unified influence. But can they? More divides than binds them (p3).

Chinese companies are racing up the technology ladder and threatening many North American industries in the process. Read what you can do (p4-6).

U.S. trade policy is unclear and the ambiguous signals are confusing. This needs to change (p7-8).

WTCDE MEMBERS: Utilizing Your World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) Card

In accordance with the World Trade Centers Association (WTCA), every member of the World Trade Center Delaware (WTC) has a reciprocal membership with all licensed WTCs globally. The WTCA reinforces this policy by the issuance of a global WTCA membership card. This greatly helps the local membership marketing efforts of each WTC, and it vastly increases the amount of services that WTCs can offer their members. Upon joining or renewing membership annually to the World Trade Center Delaware, members receive a WTCA Card enabling access to this reciprocity. Your WTCA Card and WTCA.org link all other WTCA members for support in providing services to their local members. No other organization in the world, which is devoted to international trade, can offer businesses a home base in more than 300 cities located in 92 countries. Currently there are 326 licensed WTCs globally, including some licenses in the process of development/establishment.

    WTCA Reciprocity includes:
    • Group Trade Missions, with the cooperation of other WTCs, include such services as: locating partners, agents/distributors, setting up business meetings, government meetings, protocol, meeting the visiting delegation at the airport, helping with hotel discounts, etc.
    • Matchmaking - WTCs use each other to sell their clients' products and services. They match visitors from other WTCs with their own membership.
    • Posting trade opportunities on individual web sites and publicizing them in local papers.
    • Hosting exchanges of students, business visitors, etc.
    • Offering trade information on both local marketplaces and WTC members.
