Traveling to Florida with Your Horse?
1.) Make sure a month prior to leaving that you have a current up to date coggins that is an AGID coggins (not a stat Eliza coggins) and a week prior to leaving have a current health certificate. 2.) Review the original coggins paper to see that it matches the health certificate that is issued within 30 days of transport. Additionally don't forget the horse's passport and/or copies of ownership papers. 3.) We recommend vaccinating for west nile virus, EWT, and Flu/Rhino within 3 months of going to Florida. These are insect transmitted diseases(west nile, eastern, western) or disease that horses are exposed to when at shows etc 4.) Monitor the horse's temperature regularly starting 5-7 days prior to leaving for Florida. If your horse exhibits any fever > 101.5, any coughing, sneezing, or obvious nasal discharge, we recommend postponing your departure until your horse has been afebrile for 5 days or is checked out and ok'd for travel by a veterinarian 5.) Make sure you know your hauler, or if you are hauling the horses yourself, ensure that the horses have access to fresh water on the drive or make frequent stops to offer them fresh water. 6.) If your horses are prone to stress induced gastric ulceration, it is a good idea to administer UlcerGuard starting 3 days before leaving and continuing until 3 days after arrival in Florida.
International Travel with Your Horse If you are planning to send your horse out of the country, there are some important things you need to know. International travel, to Canada or overseas, requires detailed paperwork that must be completed by a vet and the US Dept of Agriculture (USDA). Requirements vary depending upon the horses origin and destination; however, for any destination you will need international health papers. The majority of countries require an AGID Coggins be pulled within 6 months (ELISA is ok for Canadian import). International health documents must be completed by a vet before being sent to the USDA. The USDA will review and endorse the documents before returning them to the shipping agent for use as a travel document. Working closely with your shipping agent, your vet and allowing ample time for the preparation of documents will ensure a smooth start to your trip! |
You wouldn't haul your horses without a spare tire would you?
