CALC Gets Results!

Peter Defazio's office in DC recently contacted CALC requesting  to meet with CALC and community organizers to check the local pulse.  CALC convened a group of peace and justice activists to share our concerns about issues such as avoiding conflict with Iran and the use of Drones as tools of warfare.  This led into subsequent meetings with DeFazio staff regarding immigrant rights.  We will continue to work with our elected  representatives, both locally and nationally, to ensure that they put peace and justice issues at the top of their agendas.

Working Locally

Like many of you, I am all wrapped up in the drama, trauma and skepticism of what seems to be a particularly polarizing election year.  It feels irresponsible to ignore what is going on at the national level, even while it can seem futile to get so sucked in.  While I vote, and strive to stay educated and informed, like many of you, I do my real work on a more local level.

One of the truly important things about CALC is that we work hard locally, while staying connected to the issues that affect and concern so many of us on a regional, national and global level.  As an organization, we support issues, causes, and ballot measures, but do not lobby for individuals. Of course, our staff members and volunteers are free to have their own political passions and interests and support the candidates they believe in.  As an organization, we are privileged to work with all the different elected officials from various backgrounds, parties and affiliations.

Our recent work to make Eugene and Lane County "drone free zones" is a perfect example of how a national concern is also a local concern.  The use of drone technology by some police departments around the U.S. (some funded by grants from Homeland Security)-drones that are capable of both surveillance and being used as weapons-poses a threat to our communities.  This is not just a militarization threat, but raises questions around racial profiling and domestic safety and CALC is paying attention.

It is possible to live your convictions and work on a local level-even on big, national and global issues.  CALC is a great way to do real work that matters and support real work that matters as we strive to build the world we want to live in.

Immigrant Integration

CALC maintains an active role at the Lane County Network for Immigrant Integration. Most recently, CALC staff have been supporting the network by giving presentations to the group on plans and models for immigrant integration that other jurisdictions and communities have used that the network might be able to utilize as well.

Joanna Bernstein's guest viewpoint, 'Let's make immigrant integration a reality' (link goes to article) appeared in the Register Guard both in response to, and as extension of, a recent cover story that the Register Guard had published about the new Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program for immigrant youth. Her article offered a glimpse of what immigrant integration in Lane County in practice could look like.

We'd love to have you participate with the Back to Back Program.  Call CALC at 541-485-1755 or Silver Mogart

Shelter Rights

CALC's work on Shelter Rights in Springfield:
The Springfield Shelter Rights Alliance (SSRA), a CALC/SAFER working group, is in the process of organizing the 5th Annual Harvest Festival for Human Rights in Springfield. This family-friendly event brings together community leaders, non-profit groups, neighbors and people in need.  A truly unique celebration.  We expect to feed over 300 people at this event... please come and join us!
SSRA continues it's work on the Neighbors Without Addresses photo exhibit, taking photographs and conducting interviews with local community members.  The CALC photo project features both currently and formerly homeless individuals and families. The objective of this exhibit is to humanize the homeless population by exposing the great diversity that exists within the homeless population in order to ease the stigma and bias that this demographic often faces.

Call SAfER to help with Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect (SAfER) or the above projects:  541-485-1755 or email Joanna.

CALC's work on Shelter Rights in Eugene:

Eugene's Downtown Public Safety (Exclusion) Zone Ordinance authorizes police to exclude people from downtown; often times individuals from marginalized groups such as the homeless. The Exclusion law infringes on civil liberties, including  freedom of movement, legal representation, and equal treatment under the law.  Info:  http://cldc.org/2012/06/23/exclusion-zones/

This ordinance is scheduled to sunset November 30 unless the City Council votes to extend it.  We're urging folks to attend Monday evening's (Sept. 17) 7:30 pm public hearing at the Downtown Library and urge the Council to let the Exclusion zone expire.  If you can't attend the hearing,  contact the Mayor and City Councilors mayorcouncilandcitymanager@ci.eugene.or.us and urge them to end this archaic law.

Opportunity Village Eugene (OVE), a coalition of groups from the activist and faith communities, including CALC, is working  to establish  a self-governing and drug, alcohol and violence free community for the unhoused in Eugene. The City council has scheduled a work session September 26, to review possible sites identified by City staff for this  homeless village. Community support and involvement is needed to make this happen.

Truth in Recruiting

Military Glorifies Itself to Youth, TIR Gets Out the Truth

Too many youth are not aware that this country continues combat in Afghanistan and the enormous physical and emotional toll that the repeated tours take on our military personnel.  Too many of our youth fall for the glorious images of "service" put out by the military recruiting machine.  Truth In Recruiting (TIR) fixes that incorrect impression through our presence in schools and at career fairs telling the whole story to students.

Right now, TIR is focusing on urging schools to do what it takes to keep our youth safe.  After a local girl had sex with an Army recruiter in the Gateway recruiting office, we are meeting with school officials to ensure that recruiters do not have undue access to students.  Watch for upcoming presentations that include the film "The Invisible War" about the extent of sexual assault upon women in the military.  We think it is far past the time for the extreme degree sexual abuse in the military to be exposed. Hopefully, public indignation will cause the military to finally take effective action to stop this abuse.

If you're as concerned as we are about Truth In Recruiting we'd love to have your support.  Please think about volunteering with us.  For more information, call CALC at 541-485-1755 or email

Peace and Antimilitarism

Democracy not Dronocracy

Eugene Celebration parade observers have been buzzing over the buzzing of drones in the Peace Train. Members of CALC, WAND, Code Pink and Veterans for Peace guided miniature, mock drones through the streets of Eugene to raise awareness about the use of drones in modern warfare and the potential threat to civil liberties they pose if they are used to spy on American citizens at home.

U.S. drones are killing innocent civilians in Pakistan, Yemen and other countries and may soon be used in the United States. (http://www.codepink4peace.org/section.php?id=469

A coalition of peace workers from the above mentioned groups plans to propose that the Eugene City Council and Lane County Commissioners pass resolutions condemning the use of drones and creating a local drone-free zone.

International Day of Peace is Friday, September 21... there are numerous local events to educate and inspire.  Look for CALC's Community Organizer Michael Carrigan at these events. Check out the whole day's schedule HERE.

If you would like to assist in our efforts to Promote Peace please email Michael  or call 541-485-1755

Safe Schools
Back to School means Safe Schools Groups are Getting Busy

SAFER's Safe Schools Working Group (SSWG) is hard at work preparing to welcome new representatives to the safe schools network this school year. SSWG supports the Springfield School District representatives in each school that help students and their families who feel they are victims of bullying or bias. No student should be afraid to go to school. Also, SSWG is currently helping the Springfield school district develop language to give to students, parents, and faculty about the district's new gender neutral bathrooms.

As many of you know, we started work last year to expand our Safe Schools work throughout Lane County by working with each school district and the Lane Education Service District at large.  We are jumping in to reconnect with all of the Gay Straight Alliances-adult and student leaders and CALC is involved with both the 4J Equity Committee and the Bethel Safety & Equity Committee, lending support and learning how we can all work together to improve the safety and school environments for LGBTIQ students, staff and families.

Please contact Joanna to help out with SSWG or to help support GSAs please contact Kori.
