"Encounter Point": Film About Israeli & Palestinian Reconciliation

Tuesday, July 20, 7p.m.

 

The documentary "Encounter Point", is a powerful story of cooperation between bereaved Israeli and Palestinian families committed to reconciliation and peaceful solutions. The film is co-sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Eugene and J Street Eugene. It will screen at 7pm at UUCE's new location at 13th and Chambers. The one-hour film will be followed by an optional discussion.

Out with the Oilgarchy

National Day of Action Against BP

Tuesday, July 20, 5 PM 

 

Meet at Skinner Butte Park,

South of the Bathroom near the Kid's play area

Bicycles leave at 5:15  carpoolers leave 5:30

6:00 P.M. action at BP's subsidiary ARCO/AM-PM

If unable to ride, please join the carpool or take the bus

 

The theme for the event is "Out with the Oilygarchy" and will involve a "Boycott and Bust BP Bike Brigade" to an ARCO/AM-PM station (subsidiary of BP).  Event organizers are recruiting people to participate in a picket at the entryways to the ARCO station, in solidarity with people in the Gulf who have lost their livelihoods

 

In conjunction with other local groups, CALC demanding full accountability from BP, Halliburton, Transocean and other implicated companies  in the Gulf oil spill and that all recovery costs must be paid by them.

Eva Castellanoz has lived in Nyssa, Oregon since 1957 and has been a huge force for change in her community with her work teaching art as a tool for empowerment to young Latinos, her community activist work, and her work as a curandera (traditional healer). 

 

Cost: $5 to $20 suggested donation, which will go to Eva.  No one turned away for lack of ability to pay.  An Interpreter will be present

Gaza Update

 Please join Gerri Haynes for a report on the present situation in Gaza: the political and humanitarian crisis and hopes for the future.

 

Gerri Haynes is past president and board member of Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility and past National PSR board member and treasurer. Since 1993, she has organized and led delegations to the Middle East: Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.  She visits Palestine at least once a year.  As a nurse and Palliative Care Consultant with a specialty in Grief and Bereavement, she is on the affiliate clinical faculty of the University of Washington School of Nursing and has taught classes in Iraq, Palestine and Israel.  Most recently, in May, 2010, Gerri and her husband, physician Bob Haynes led a medical delegation to serve in Gaza.

"Expedition: Blue Planet 2010" tour with Alexandra Cousteau

Eugene Public Library's Summer Reading theme this year is "Make Waves!" internationally-acclaimed water advocate and educator Alexandra Cousteau will give a free talk highlighting  ways everyone can help preserve a healthy planet through water conservation and sustainable management.

 

She will visit Eugene as part of the five-month "Expedition: Blue Planet 2010" tour sponsored by National Geographic.

 

Alexandra's grandfather, Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau, pioneered the use of film to teach environmental stewardship, Alexandra has grown up to energetically carry on the family legacy.

LASC "Potluck and Presentation" featuring the documentary

"The Coca-Cola Case",  with discussion after the film.

The film presents an indictment of the Coca-Cola empire and its alleged kidnapping, torture and murder of union leaders in

Colombia. The filmmakers follow activists as they attempt to hold the multinational company accountable.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki Commemoration

Friday, August 6th: 7:00-9:30 p.m.

 

Please join us Friday, August 6th for a community gathering commemorating the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, at Alton Baker Park's small shelter, located near the park entrance and the duck pond.

 

The event will start at 7:00 pm with a community potluck.  At 8:00 pm there will be a program with Taiko drumming, traditional Japanese Obon dancing, music and a call to action.

 

 The event will close at 8:45 pm with the floating of candle lanterns on the Duck Pond while traditional Japanese music is played by Koto master Mitsuki Dazai.
