Greetings! |
We have another busy month lined up here at Range USA. We are all hyped up about the new Living Social Deal we will be running the 2nd-4th, the planning for ZN3 is picking up speed, we're planning the promotions for the upcoming holiday season and then we start the process of planning 2012! It's all downhill from here! The new year will be here before we know it.
And, if you are anything like me, you will look up from all the work we have to do and wonder where the time went. Then I'll start to remember all the things I promised my sons I would do with them (as "Cat's in the Cradle" plays in my head.) But don't fear; I'm a master of making excuses. "It's too hot to play catch." "It's too hot to go fishing." "We don't have the money." "I'm too tired to do that." And, I justify it by telling myself that I want the times my boys and I spend together to be perfect - perfect weather, perfect gear, perfect conversations, perfect energy level, the perfect time. But, the truth is, I'll never have enough money. And, the time will never be the perfect time. And, my kids wouldn't know the best fishing rod from a cane pole. And, I don't see myself catching up on my sleep for at least another 16 years. It never fails - by waiting for the perfect scenario to manifest itself, I blow a multitude of amazing opportunities I have to spend with my boys. I'm tired of doing nothing while waiting for the perfect opportunity. I'm missing out on life...on my boy's life. They are already growing up at lightning speed (the twins are almost 2 years old) and I hear it only gets worse the older I get! Starting now, I refuse to let them slip by and have a sharper focus on what is truly important.
Words you'll never hear on someone's deathbed: "I wish I'd have spent more time at the office."

| Zombie Night 3 Info! | |
We are now taking names and information of people who are interested in volunteering at this year's ZN3 event. If you are interested, please email the following information to this email address: name, address, phone number, email address, dates and times you are available to work, number of days you are willing to work, any special skills/training you may have (police, fire, EMT, etc.), if you have taken any classes at Range USA, if you know any of our employees or instructors, and your t-shirt size! Last year was a blast and everyone had a great time! You will definitely have a great time working along side our Range USA family, as we get to know each other, and as we celebrate a successfuul event when it is all over at a local restaurant. You wouldn't believe the looks we got last year as 30+ members of the Range USA Zombie Anhiliation Unit walked into Fridays! Priceless! So, we hope all the volunteers from last year sign back up and we hope to welcome in a whole new group of volunteers for this year's event.
Volunteers will be required to sign a liability waiver and their jobs may include crowd control, handing out information or goodies, customer interaction, shooting video or taking pictures, helping to set up and take down the scenarios, range assistants, loaders, runners, etc. The nights are October 28-30 and the event begins at 6:00pm each night and go until we are through. There will be informational/organizational meetings held beginning in October. Volunteers will be informed of those meetings. Please email any questions to this address.

| A Firearm History and It's Birth | |
I will share a few key items that occurred in the United States of America during this year. Then I will go into the details of the creation of this firearm. Such as who, when, how, and why.
This being the anniversary of the famous 1911, I thought I would start here.
Some Key events in 1911 were...
- The first airplane bombing experiments with explosives occurred in San Francisco.
- A plane landed on the deck of a ship for the first time, in the USA.
- Ronald Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois (February 6, 1911)
- Victor Berger (Wisconsin) becomes the first socialist congressman in United States history.
- On March 7, 1911 the US sent 20,000 troops to the Mexican border.
- The first Indianapolis 500 hundred occurred. Ray Harroun is the winner with a speed of 74.59 MPH, driving the "Marmon Wasp".
History of the Model 1911...
Colt Model 1911 was the product of a very capable person, namely John Moses Browning.
With the United Sates being disappointed with the stopping power of the .38 issued to our soldiers, they felt the soldiers needed a weapon of .45 caliber ammunition.
In 1906 the selection process, started to find a replacement to the current sidearm in use. Firearms were submitted by Colt, Luger, Savage, Knoble, Bergmann, White-Merrill and Smith & Wesson, and Browning.
The US decided to perform field tests. The ones that were selected (Colt's or Savage's) performed to what the military thought would work.
Browning was determined to prove the superiority of his handgun, so he went to Hartford to personally supervise the production of the gun. There he met Fred Moore, a young Colt employee with whom he worked in close cooperation trying to make sure that each part that was produced for the test guns was simply the best possible. The guns produced were submitted again for evaluation, to the committee. A torture test was conducted, on March 3rd, 1911. The test consisted of having each gun fire 6000 rounds. One hundred shots would be fired and the pistol would be allowed to cool for 5 minutes. After every 1000 rounds, the pistol would be cleaned and oiled. After firing those 6000 rounds, the pistol would be tested with deformed cartridges; some seated too deeply, some not seated enough, etc. The gun would then be rusted in acid or submerged in sand and mud and some more tests would then be conducted.
Browning's pistols passed the whole test series with flying colors. It was the first firearm to undergo such a test, firing continuously 6000 cartridges, a record broken only in 1917 when Browning's recoil-operated machine gun fired a 40,000 rounds test.
The report of the evaluation committee (taken from 'The .45 Automatic, An American Rifleman Reprint', published by the National Rifle Association of America) released on the 20th of March 1911 stated:
"Of the two pistols, the board was of the opinion
that the Colt is superior, because it is more
reliable, more enduring, more easily disassembled
when there are broken parts to be replaced, and
more accurate."
On March 29th, 1911, the Browning-designed, Colt-produced .45 Automatic pistol was selected as the official sidearm of the Armed Forces of U.S.A., and named Model 1911.

| Gun Powder | |

This article is continued from last month's Gun Powder article. If you haven't read August click here first and read it. I spoke to the Tennessee Firearms Association (TFA) in July and they wanted me to address what it takes to keep you out of a self-defense situation. This information is so important that I felt the need to pass it on to all Range USA customers. Though we purchase a handgun, training with it, obtain and keep our handgun carry permit, clean our gun and practice with it we hope we NEVER need it to defend ourselves. In case we do we must be prepared....

9-11 Article |
This September 11th will mark the ten year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. If you're like me you can remember exactly where you were on that horribly tragic day. Every single one of us scrambled to get in front of a TV, radio or some sort of media outlet so we could find out what exactly was going on. If you were like me I at first thought it was all a really bad joke, but when I saw for myself what was unfolding on TV I knew it wasn't a bad joke but instead a nightmare for our great country.
I remember when I saw that first image of a plane crashing into the towers, I fell to my knees & prayed for the people in that building, on that plane & for the Firemen who would be heading up to face the horror that had been unleashed. As I watched those Firemen, Policemen and EMS workers head into those towers that day never to return, God brought to mind John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. "
I remember the next day on my way into the fire station that there was a noticeable somber mood even on the road. I remember everywhere we went that day & the weeks following we would have people came up to us, shake our hands & hug us thanking us for our service. Every single man or woman that I encountered walked away from me telling me that they would be praying for me and God Bless.
I remember in the days, weeks and months following that horrible, senseless act of terror that everywhere I went I saw American flags! I remember going to church on Sunday and Wednesdays seeing people that I had never seen before. I remember liberal news media outlets actually talking about God in a positive manner and asking America to pray for each other. I remember driving by churches seeing the parking lots fuller than normal with people inside on their knees praying for our country too.
I remember when our troops went off to war against the terrorist organizations who committed these acts of terrorism. We as a country were proud of our troops and were behind them one hundred percent, including our politicians both Republican and Democrat. If our troops needed something they got it, there was no question asked.
I look around me today and our churches aren't as full as they were the months after those attacks. Those faces that I didn't know are long gone except for at Easter and Christmas. I look around me in my church and I see that we as Christians have become more tolerant of the world. We as Christians are standing by watching as our faith and our country is being attacked not only from the outside but within as well.
I watch on TV how our troops are demonized for protecting themselves and our freedom. I watch on the news when our Commanding officers ask for more troops and supplies they are told no or they have to wait till it's almost too late. I watch as our Bible and flag are burned not only abroad but here in the US under the guise of freedom of speech and tolerance.
Now the media doesn't use the word terrorist for fear of offending upsetting someone. We no longer call a murderer a murderer, but mentally deranged when he kills our soldiers on U.S. soil. When I hear these things it angers me but most of all it saddens me. Ten years after 9-11 our country is farther away from God than it ever has been. God has been taken out of our schools, our court rooms, our government buildings, our places of business, our homes and sometimes even our churches and the list could go on. We see the moral and ethical fibers of our country fading away right before our eyes.
So as you take some time to reflect this September 11th, I urge you to find that sense of patriotism that we all had the months following. I also would like to urge you to get back on your knees America and pray for its future. Psalms 9:17 says; "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. "
