 Zombie Night 3 Info!

This year's Zombie Night 3 is currently being planned! So far, we do know that it is going to be October 28th, 29th, and 30th. And, we know it is going to to be bigger, better and more awesome than last year! For this year's t-shirt design, we are conducting a t-shirt design contest! Here are the details on the contest:

We are having a contest for this year's zombie night t-shirt design. All entries must be received no later than 12:00am, Monday, September 12th, 2011. Designs can be in black & white or full color. They need to be suitable for print on a t-shirt. Artwork can have any placement - arms, front, back. A design that would work well on both short and long sleeves is desirable. Ideally, all designs should be submitted in AI, JPG, or TIFF format, but other formats are acceptable. Email all entries here. Please type "ZN3 Contest" in the subject line. Feel free to include a narrative explaining the design or the nuances of the details. All participants will be required to sign a document that transfers complete ownership of the design to Range USA, Inc. before the design will officially be submitted in the contest. The winner of the contest will be announced on October 1st, 2011. The winner of the contest will receive a FREE Founding Father's Membership (a $600.00 value) and two (2) FREE ZN3 t-shirts! The winner of the contest will be chosen by Range USA, Inc. Any tie will be broken by a vote on the Range USA Facebook page. We will keep our Facebook friends updated on the progress of the contest. Good luck everyone! And...GO!

New Class at Range USA

Close Quarter Handgun

Tuition:  $125.00

Pre-requisite: SSS - Self-Defense Handgun II

REQUIRED Equipment:
Quality, fully functional handgun
Strong side hip holster
Quality gun belt: Galco, 5.11, Blackhawk (not a designer belt)
Minimum of 3 magazines or speedloaders
Magazine/speedloader holders
Minimum of 5 dummy rounds in your caliber
Concealment garment
Approximately 500 rounds of ammunition ("factory new" recommended)
Comfortable clothes and shoes

Course Description: In this course you'll use the basic gun fighting skills you learned in Self-Defense Handgun I and II, and you will complete all drills with only one hand!  Using your dominant hand for some drills, and your support hand for other drills you will experience scenarios that confine you to close quarter confrontations. As we know most self-defense situations occur within nine feet or less and due to reaction time a one-handed draw and fire is probable. It is also possible you may injure your dominate hand/arm and have to shoot with your support hand. To be prepared for those types of situations you need to learn the skills!  This course is another step in preparing to protect yourself and your loved ones!

Gun Powder

I spoke to the Tennessee Firearms Association (TFA) in July and they wanted me to address was what it takes to keep yourself out of a self-defense situation. This information is so important that I felt the need to pass it on to all Range USA customers. Though we purchase a handgun, training with it, obtain and keep our handgun carry permit, clean our gun and practice with it we hope we NEVER need it to defend ourselves. Below is part one of the information I gave TFA. Part two will appear in the September 2011 newsletter. If you are interested in TFA the website is here and there is a Shelby County Chapter which meets monthly at Range USA.

Situational awareness makes up 90% of self-defense, the remaining 10% being physical techniques. With awareness, you can identify and avoid potentially dangerous situations. Without it, you become an easy target for a criminal.

You should know who Jeff Cooper is and if you do not, you need to Google him! Jeff Cooper's Color Code is about one's state of mind and is a continuum of your awareness and readiness to defend. The objective is to constantly flow from one color to the next above or below, depending on the situation.

WHITE:

You feel secure, whether or not you are actually safe.

Awareness is switched off.

You are unaware of your environment, its inhabitants, and their rituals of attack.

Attackers look for victims in this state.

YELLOW:

You are cautious. You should spend most of the time in this state.

Awareness is switched on and relaxed alertness.

You have a 360-degree peripheral awareness of such environmental danger spots as secluded doorways, entries, and alleys, as well as such psychological triggers as adrenal dump and attacker ruses. Be aware of people, vehicles, behind large objects, dark areas, etc.

ORANGE:

You are in danger. You are aware of a potential threat.

State of threat evaluation.

Specific alert. A possible target has been identified. A particular situation that has drawn your attention and could present a major problem. Someone may be giving oral indicators such as direct threats or using suspicious language. Focus on the potential attacker.

Check to see if there is an avenue of escape, potential weapons available, and if others around you are friend or foe.

Decision is made to take action.

RED:

You are in conflict.

Fight or flight. Flee, defend, or attack. You have evaluated the situation, and if there is a threat, you prepare to fight or run.

Never stand or fight if there is a possibility of fleeing.

Carry out decision to act made in Code Orange. You don't have to think; no indecision on the course of action; you are prepared.

Use the level of force appropriate to the threat.

As you move through your daily life think about the color code and situational awareness (SA). Everyone can improve their SA. Spend most of your time in YELLOW and hope you never reach RED, but if you do have the mindset and skills to survive it.

More in part two in September.....

Three Lessons from Coins, Sheep, and a Prodigal Son

Growing up in Church, I became very familiar with the first four books of the New Testament, a.k.a. the Gospels. I remember being in Sunday School and hearing about all of the Bible stories such as Noah, Jonah, David, and Jesus. However, I remember the stories of Luke 15 had a profound effect on me, even as a child.

I remember hearing the parables of the lost coin, the lost sheep, and the lost (or prodigal) son. I mainly remember the parable of the lost sheep because I remember thinking "who would waste their time on a stupid sheep?" Of course, I was only 6 at the time, so that was natural thinking for someone my age. However, at age 20, while reading my Bible, I came upon these three parables again, and this time they spoke to my spirit in a profound way that I wish to share with you.

Luke 15 begins with the reason behind why these parables were told in the first place. Jesus had been confronted by religious leaders, asking him why he was hanging out with such detestable sinners. Jesus illustrates his reasoning by giving these three parables.

Let us begin with the parable of the Lost Coin. This parable speaks of a woman who had 100 coins, and lost one. She swept the entire house, day in and day out, until she finally found the coin. She was so overwhelmed with joy about finding this coin that she threw a party, invited all of her friends, and celebrated the return of her precious coin. I can see this woman now. She has a small wooden box, loaded to the rim with these 100 precious coins. She watched these coins as a hawk, always conscious as to how many coins were in the box at all times. Because she kept such a close eye on these coins, I am led to believe that these coins were very special to her. Perhaps she sacrificed so much in order to obtain these coins. Then one day, she loses a coin, and all of a sudden her world revolves around finding this lost coin. To us it seems ridiculous, that a woman who still had 99 coins would spend every waking hour searching for this one lost coin. To me, that says that she placed a value on each and every coin, not valuing any one over the other. As she begins searching for this coin, I can imagine that she begins getting very upset. Much like when we lose something, I imagine that she was talking to herself, telling herself that the coin had to be close by. Then she finds the coin. However, she doesn't just find the coin, she celebrates finding the coin. She has a party, invites all of her friends, and puts this one coin on display for all to see. I can hear her now: "Look! I found my coin! I was so worried. I thought it was lost forever. But it came back to me, and I am so happy."

The parable of the Lost Sheep tells a similar story. A shepherd with 100 sheep loses one, and begins searching for it frantically. Something that you may not know about sheep is that they are incredibly stupid animals. If one sheep escapes and walks off of a cliff, it's only a matter of time before the other sheep follow suit. So, it would appear that there are two reasons why this shepherd would want to go after his one lost sheep. The first reason is that this sheep was his livelihood, and was extremely valuable to him. The other reason is because he didn't want his other sheep to follow. I can picture his thoughts in my mind: "Oh no! Where is my sheep? There are wolves on the other side of this field. I hope it didn't wander over there. What about the river? Did it fall in and drown? I have to find it before it reaches the cliff!" But, much like the woman who found her coin, the shepherd finds his sheep and celebrates with a party, gathering all of those that he can find and praising his found sheep.

Finally, we get to the parable of the Lost (or Prodigal) Son. Everyone knows this story: a man gets tired of living at home so he asks his dad for all of his inheritance and leaves. We also all know that the son comes back home, but I am surprised when I hear that not many people understand what happened to the son while he was gone. See, when he first started off, everything was going his way. He was spending each night in a different hotel, probably with a different woman. He was eating fine meals every morning, noon, and night and only bought the finest robes. Soon, his supply began to dwindle, so he just became more frugal. Instead of caviar for breakfast, he was probably eating the free continental at his hotel. Instead of the finest fibers from Arabia, he probably began bargain shopping at the local marketplaces. Yet his supply dwindled further still, and he had to resort to more desperate means. He began feeding pigs to make a living, and became so hungry that the pods he was feeding them began to look appetizing. So he went back home, and we all know what happened next: his father greeted him with open arms, put a ring on his finger, gave him his finest robes, and threw a celebration for his son who he thought was dead.

So what can we, as Christians, learn from these three familiar parables? From the parable of the Lost Coin, we know that God has placed a special value on everyone. Just like the one lost coin, God does not value any one of us over the other. God loves us all equally, and sent his Son Jesus to die for all of us, not just some of us. From the parable of the Lost Sheep, we can understand that the decisions we make have the ability to affect those around us. From the parable of the Lost Son, we understand that God has never stopped loving us. God doesn't move, it is us, as sinners, who move away from Him. How often have we asked God for a blessing, received it, and then forgotten the one who gave it to us? Much like the Prodigal, we take the blessing that God has given us and we use it to our benefit. As the blessing begins to wear down, we still don't turn to God like we should. It isn't until we are completely barren that we realize that we need God again. However, the best part is that when we return to him, he celebrates. In all three parables, the owner of the lost thing threw a huge celebration once the lost thing became found. I can see the father of the Prodigal standing in the doorway as he sees a shadowy figure on the horizon. As soon as he sees that figure, he begins running, shouting "Son! Son! Is that you? I have waited for your return! I love you, and I have forgiven you. Please stay with me. I love you!" And as both embrace, the father commands his servants to bring out the best robes and jewelry and to adorn the son with them. When we walk away from God, all we need to do is turn back around, and He is more than eager to meet us and welcome us back into His presence.

I hope you were as blessed by this lesson as I was, and my prayer is that God blesses you throughout your livelihood.
