Ocracoke Community Radio Project Receives Grant |

On September 17, 2009 the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) awarded $67,098.00 under the Public Telecommunications Facilities Program (PTFP) to the Ocracoke Foundation for the Ocracoke Community Radio Project - WOVV. The funds will be used to purchase equipment for the construction of a high power broadcast station. The total cost of the project is $89,465.00. PTFP is a competitive grant program to help public broadcasting stations, state and local governments, Indian Tribes and nonprofit organizations construct facilities to bring educational and cultural programs to the American Public using broadcasting and nonbroadcasting telecommunications technologies. To receive funding, a local match of $22,367.00 is required and the Ocracoke Community Radio Project team has formed a Grant match committee to launch a matching funds campaign. The Grant match committee made up of Jenny Scarborough, Robert Raborn and Greg Honeycutt will be starting the one third match campaign($22,000.00) immediately with the goal of reaching that amount by year's end. Greg has agreed to chair the committee and hopes to add one or two more individuals to the group. The most effective way to secure our founding sponsors ($1,000.00 gifts) or larger and our partners($400.00 gifts) will be talking to these folks on an individual basis on the many reasons that this radio project is good for Ocracoke. Not only the cultural and educational benefits, but an almost instant source of information, especially leading up to emergency situations, such as hurricanes, will prove to be extremely valuable. There will be special recognition of the founding sponsors and partners if desired. We are still formulating that part of the campaign. The committee will also concentrate on our grassroots with this project, this is how WOVV has gotten this far, as we solicit any size gift no matter how small. Please contact Greg via email or phone for more information or contributing to this local effort. greg@oceanatlanticrentals.com 252-207-1305 |
Watermen's Double Feature A Success |
The Ocracoke Working Watermen's Exhibit preview opening on Saturday September 5 was a great success! At 4:00PM the watermen held a BBQ mullet and fish fry fundraiser dinner and thanks to the donated local baked goodies and ice cream, dessert was served at the Watermen's Exhibit on the docks at the Community Square at 6:30. Visitors enjoyed the exhibit topics, looking through old newspapers, photo albums and of course the sunset views, passing boats, vintage atmosphere and commented on how they enjoyed the BBQ mullet then upon walking into the exhibit were greeted with the first exhibit panel "Mullet". There is a vintage menu that shows where "Ocracoke Mullet" was served, history of mullet camps, islander's remembrances of mullet, how mullet was packed in salt and traded off island, and how mullet is fished for today. Combining watermen's events with the watermen's exhibit is an educational activity. People get a chance to experience local flavor and traditions in the midst of learning about local history and the present day life of the watermen. It is a rewarding experience that visitors can take home with them. Education is important if our local culture, seafood industry and economy are going survive. What really give the exhibit that special touch are the local watermen's antiques that have been donated. Below are some of the items; A fire lighting box, metal fish basket, wind gauge, boat bailer, iron pound net pole rings, vintage boat motors, marsh gages, net needles, phone from Quork Hammock Hunting Club, Jack Dudley's Waterfowl books, nets, crab pots, hurricane lamp, Thurston Gaskill decoy, Brant, Pintail and Red Head mounts, Quork Hammock folding bench, shelf and photos. During the fish house renovation, an old wood and iron ice shaver was found in the floor seam against the back wall. |
NC Seafood Festival Reminder |
Don't forget to visit OWWA in the Chef's Tent both Saturday and Sunday. Ocracoke Watermen (OWWA) will be preparing drum cakes at the "Cooking with the Chefs" event at the 23rd Annual North Carolina Seafood Festival on the Morehead City Waterfront October 2-4, 2009. The Chef's Event is designed to promote the benefits of eating and buying local seafood. Drum Cake cooking is set for 6:00PM Saturday the 3rd. OWWA will also have an educational booth - their fourth appearance at the festival. NC Sea Grant, along with OFI helped the Watermen develop "Ocracoke Fresh", a brand name for specialty seafood products of Ocracoke Seafood Company.

Become Involved |
Help us continue our work. In the past three years OFI has secured nearly $900,000 for special projects that benefit Ocracoke. While we have done this without operating funds for the Foundation itself, we need organizational support for basic expenses to manage existing projects and pursue new initiatives. Please join in helping OFI be a strong local organization to benefit our community. All donations are tax deductible. Thank you. |
