A Beautiful View

The McLaurin Family and Friends (Raleigh)
Harry F. O'Neal's skiff has been a great spot for children and family photos!  The skiff was a gift from Susie Scott O'Neal.  It was anchored to the dock behind the Watermen's Exhibit in hopes of encouraging people to sit a little longer and enjoy the views of the harbor.  The docks at the Community Square are listed as a "significant structure" under the Village's National Register Historic District Listing.

The Watermen's Exhibit
The exhibit is making great progress.  Cosmetic changes include sanding and staining the wood floor, fresh paint, new lighting, and a wrap around bench to match a vintage version.  A small office was created out of the space where fishing poles were made during the Jack's Store time period and true to the island salvaging ethic, an original 1940's window was used as a pass through from the office to the exhibit space.  It is a beautiful space that always captures a breeze and the views can't be found anywhere else.  Exhibit panels are now being installed and will add additional wall space for topics - such as oyster restoration, effort to save the fish house, waterfowlers, mulleting, drum, youth involvement, educational programs and more.  The watermen and the Ocracoke Preservation Society will be working with the Foundation on selecting photos and information. The exhibit space can also be used by groups - both local and off-island for meetings, classes and activities.  A digital projector, screen and easel will be available.

WOVV
WOVV Arm Wrestling EventOn June 23, 2009 WOVV held probably one of the most innovative fundraisers on the island - a women's arm wrestling championship.  Contestants came in costume of historic and contemporary personalities.  The event was held at SmacNally's on the harbor and drew an overflow crowd.  All proceeds go to support the ongoing effort to establish an FM community based non-commercial radio broadcast station.  The Ocracoke Community Radio Project (OCRP) committee has been working on an on-line station www.WOVV.org, which was made possible in part through funding OFI received from the Outer Banks Community Foundation, private donations and fundraisers. Stop by the station, located across from the Anchorage Hotel to learn more and see the operation.

Fish House Gives First Tour

South Graham ElementaryThe fish house gave its first educational tour after the renovation to South Graham Elementary from Alamance County.  The students also toured the fish house last year.  The watermen talked about traditional fishing methods, the history of fishing on the island and a typical day at the fish house.

Ocracoke Seafood

Ocracoke Fresh LabelThe watermen have selected the logo shown to the left, for Ocracoke Fresh - a branding program to help promote the value added products Ocracoke Seafood Company will be marketing.  The Foundation has been facilitating workshops with the watermen and NC Sea Grant to formulate a marketing plan based on identification of Ocracoke's seafood related assets. The development and purpose behind "Ocracoke Fresh" will be a featured topic at the Watermen's Exhibit.
