HALLOWEEN!
No tricks here, just treats.  Here's what's in store (literally):

10% off all purchases if you come by in costume.  (YOU must be in costume.  Not your kids.  Not your dog.  YOU.)  For purposes of this offer, the judges have deemed that animal ears and witch hats count as a costume.
ghost dogs
Non-liquid treats for the kiddos.  Dog biscuits for the doggos.

Special "adult chocolate" treat for the grown-ups.  We'll be sampling Vinedo de Los Vientos Alcyone, a dessert wine from Uruguay made from the tannat grape and a special infusion of herbs and spices.  Sounds like a trick, right?  Trust us - it's definitely a treat!

FLASH EDUCATIONAL SERIES
Talk about flip flops, we've now decided to go ahead with the Wednesday night quick fire education program.  Every Wednesday (starting Oct 29th), Nick Gorevic will be pouring 1 - 2 wines that illustrate a specific bit of "wine geek" language.  An example might be sweet vs. dry, or oaked vs. unoaked.  You taste while Nick explains what it is you're tasting.  It's a quick (10 minutes max) and painless way to learn about wine.  Stop by and check it out.

SAT, Nov 1st: 3.00 - 5.00PM
Random selection to be determined at 2.45PM.  This being election season, feel free to lobby us with your choices.

Wine You Never Knew You Needed

AntaresMercouri Estate "Antares" 2004 (Pelopennese, Greece):

We can already hear you...Red wine from Greece?  Yuck.  Well, you'll just have to trust us when we say it's time to reconsider.

This wine is a blend of Mourvedre and a local Greek grape, Avgoustiatis.  It reminds our taste buds of Barolo with its notes of tar and leather, and its uniquely firm yet elegant tannic structure.  It does run a bit darker than Barolo, with smoky fruit, dark violets and brambles rather than roses.  A big plus - it's much more drinkable than any 2004 Barolo would be at this point in its life.  Another plus - it's also less expensive!
Price $24.99
And now for something completely different....
We've decided to dip our toes into the auction business.  One of our friends, we'll call him Jon (because that's his name), bid on and won a case of Palazzo 2003 Napa Valley red at a recent Sotheby's auction.

palazzo labelThe wine is a Bordeaux-style blend and 2003 was the first vintage for owner Scott Palazzo and star winemaker Peter Franus.  Rarely seen at retail, the wines has found a home at restaurants such as French Laundry and Per Se.

Since Jon picked the wine up at the low end of the bid range, we're able to offer it at a very good price - $39.99/bottle.  If you can even find the 2003 or more current vintages, you'll certainly pay more.

The wine is available for purchase now, but for those who want to try before they buy, we'll be sampling the wine on Friday, November 7th, from 5.30 - 7.30pm.

If you're interested in selling any extra wine you have on hand, please contact us at info@franklywines.com

Fancy Pants Wine: Bring on the Bordeaux
We've gotten a few requests to bring in some higher-end Bordeaux, and have obliged with a few 1998s from several classified chateaux.

bordeaux speaks

Now 1998 isn't considered one of the many vintages of the century, but there are two big advantages to that:  1) the wines are relatively well-priced for classified Bordeaux and 2) you can drink them NOW, while you're waiting for your vintages of the century to come of age.  (Don't know what classification we're talking about - just ask...we'll happily pontificate.)

Here's what we have on hand:

Chateau La Lagune 1998 (Haut-Medoc) - $52.99
Chateau Duhart Milion 1998 (Pauillac) - $72.99
Chateau Brane Catennac 2998 (Margaux) - $72.99

We're going to order additional bottles this week.  If you're interested in reserving some, we're offering 10% off on any pre-orders of 3 bottles or more (mixing and matching chateaux is allowed.)  Orders must be received by Saturday, Nov 1st via phone or email.

As a special bonus for those who actually read this newsletter - we'll have a bottle of each open on Wednesday evening, from 5.00pm until 8pm.  Come by and try.
