Snow Science Saturdays
Snow Science - Dry ice Starting Saturday, January 8, visit the Fleet for exciting "snow science" activities every Saturday! The new Discovery Lab has been transformed into a place for icy investigations, including ice cream and snow crystal making. Hands-on activities are only $2 with admission. Make plans to explore the wonders of winter before things thaw out.

Saturdays: January 8, 15, 22, and 29
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Take Off on a Public Challenger Mission
Challenger

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger, the Fleet will hold a special Public Challenger Mission to Mars in the Nierman Challenger Learning Center. Visitors age 10 and older will work in teams to solve real-life science, technology and math problems using the Fleet's unique, hands-on space simulators. High-tech hardware and computer software enhance the realistic feel of the mission control room and the futurist space station, closely mirroring the work astronauts complete in orbit.

Saturday, January 29
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Attend an Afternoon Scholars Lecture
Senior Monday

On the first Monday of every month you can hear from a local expert as they share their latest research. In January David Groce will discuss the rise and fall of radio and share audio examples of old-time radio programs. In February professor Stanley Maloy from the San Diego State University Biology department will lead a discussion on the threat of new infectious diseases. Lectures take place on the first Monday of every month at 12:30 PM.

DEAL ALERT! Seniors, age 65 and better, can enjoy the Afternoon Scholars Lecture, 100+ interactive exhibits and an IMAX film for only $7. Note: no coupons or additional discounts accepted.

Open New Year's Eve & New Year's Day
Reuben H. Fleet Science Center Ring in the New Year with a visit to the Fleet! The Fleet will be open on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Every Friday night you can see classic and current IMAX films at a reduced price. Starting at 6:00 PM, see an IMAX film for just $8.50. Want to make it a triple feature? You can add on up to two additional films for only $5 each. Arrive early to take advantage of exhibit gallery access and spend your Friday night at the Fleet.

January Fridays at the Fleet IMAX films include:

HUBBLE - Stunning imagery of distant galaxies, the birth of stars and planets, plus NASA's last mission to service one of history's most important observatories.

WHALES - Meet blue whales, orca, white whales and dolphins while following humpbacks as they travel thousands of miles from the krill blooms off the frigid coast of Alaska to calve in the warm waters of Hawaii.

FORCES OF NATURE - Witness the Earth at its most powerful in this IMAX adventure that showcases the awesome spectacle of earthquakes, volcanoes and severe storms and the scientists who study them.

Regularly scheduled shows also include GALAPAGOS, a natural paradise and home to 100-year old tortoises, sea lions, amphibious lizards, birds that don't fly, and a world of fantastic undersea creatures. Or catch 10-time world champion surfer Kelly Slater in THE ULTIMATE WAVE TAHITI. Follow Slater on an extreme surfing adventure to one of the world's most picturesque locales to experience the power and speed of surfing nature's most intense ocean waves.

Become a Citizen Scientist
Citizen Scientist
We are excited to announce the launch of the San Diego County Phenology Project and are currently seeking volunteers to make observations about plants they find near their home. Citizen scientists make and record observations of selected shrubs, herbs, and other native plants. The data is then analyzed to determine whether climate change is affecting the foliage in our area. Attend one volunteer training on Saturday, January 15th or Tuesday, January 25th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Save the Date
Oh Zone Gala

Save the date for OH! Zone, the Fleet's annual adults-only fundraiser. It's a night of fun to raise awareness and much needed funding for the Fleet's School Scholarship Program and other educational activities. Adults enjoy cocktails, live science demonstrations, a special presentation in the Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Dome Theater, a delicious sit-down dinner, casino games, Rock Band 3 on the Dome, dancing and much more.
